The Government of the Canary Islands has initiated essential works to repair and renovate the fishing dock in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura. This project represents a significant investment of €200,000, aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the local fishing industry.

The remodeling project has officially entered its execution phase following the signing of the act of replanteo, which involved multiple stakeholders. Key signatories include representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, the public company Gestur Canarias, and the contractor Obras Públicas Canarias S.L. This event was graced by notable figures such as Narvay Quintero, the Minister for Agriculture, and Lola García, the President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo.

Minister Narvay Quintero emphasized that these works are a direct response to long-standing demands from the fishing sector in northern Fuerteventura. The planned renovations will cover an area exceeding 2,000 square meters, adapting it to the operational needs of local fishermen. “This is part of our ongoing commitment to modernize fishing shelters across the island,” Quintero noted, highlighting that the investment is crucial for sustaining the productive and social fabric of the Canary coastline.

Major Renovation Activities
The renovation works are scheduled for completion within two months and include several key activities. Among the primary tasks is the comprehensive repair of the breakwater, utilizing a specialized coating designed to withstand high corrosion environments typical of marine settings. The project will also involve resurfacing roughly 2,000 square meters and upgrading service networks.
Additionally, a significant upgrade involves replacing the existing 5,000-liter fuel tank with a new 10,000-liter unit that meets current regulations, complete with protective measures and environmental safety standards. Other enhancements will include new access doors for the docks, construction of walkways to fishing storage areas, and a general overhaul of signage, furniture, and equipment in the area.
Financial Backing for Improvements
In a move aimed at boosting essential infrastructure for the island, the Government approved the declaration of economic contingencies late in 2025 to facilitate additional funding for this crucial project. The proposal was collaboratively initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility, emphasizing a unified approach to addressing infrastructural needs.
