Casimiro Camacho: The Timplista Who Dreamed of Being a Violinist

The Life and Legacy of Casimiro Camacho López: A Timple Icon

Casimiro Camacho López, born in Lajares in 1932, harbored dreams of becoming a violinist. However, his journey took a different path, leading him to become a legendary figure in the world of the timple, a small stringed instrument synonymous with Canarian folk music. This weekend, the Cabildo’s Department of Culture pays tribute to Camacho through a series of events that celebrate his profound influence on music and culture.

A Journey Into Music

Growing up in Lajares, Casimiro’s musicality was nurtured by the rich sounds of local parrandas, a lively gathering where music and camaraderie flourish. His father, Pedro Camacho, was a musician himself, often improvising melodies, while an uncle conducted a band in Cuba. These early experiences ignited a passion for music in young Casimiro. Although he initially aspired to master the violin, his disdain for the poor sound quality of local violinists turned him back toward the timple—a decision that would shape his legacy.

His desire for mastery in music deepened during a stay in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he encountered the rhythmic and soulful play of the violinist Pablo Zárate. Inspired, Casimiro began his formal studies in violin. Yet, it was the timple that ultimately claimed his heart. By the 1960s, Camacho had established himself as a foremost interpreter of the timple, setting a standard in the music community. His talent became the yardstick; aspiring musicians often sought to emulate his unique style, encapsulated in the saying, “touch like Casimiro.”

A Special Bond: Teacher and Student

A central figure in Casimiro’s artistic journey is Domingo Luis Rodríguez, affectionately known as El Colorao. The relationship between teacher and pupil is grounded in mutual respect and camaraderie, interwoven with fond memories of shared concerts, drinks, and laughter. El Colorao, who Casimiro regards as the best timple player in the world, reflects on this bond: “The best timplista is El Colorao, as Casimiro has proclaimed.” Their conversations often oscillate between tales of old parrandas, age-related musings, and invaluable advice.

At 89 years old, Casimiro reflects on his musical journey with nostalgia but admits that he now prefers to play in the quiet of his home. “I have my timple nearby and I play a bit with the guitar,” he shares, although he humorously adds, “but no tremolos for me, Domingo!”

Remembering a Friend: Elías Rodríguez

As this weekend’s events unfold, Casimiro fondly recalls his friend Elías Rodríguez, the author of his biography, “El Rey del Timple,” which is also being presented at one of the tribute events. Their friendship was rooted in deep conversations and shared moments, making Rodríguez a crucial part of Casimiro’s story. “I spent many days and nights talking with him,” Casimiro reminisces, highlighting the connection they forged over their love for music and storytelling.

The Tribute Events: A Celebration of Heritage

This Saturday, the town of Lajares becomes a stage for Casimiro’s legacy. The day kicks off with the unveiling of a bust in his honor, backed by Faycan Motor Toyota, a gesture celebrating both his contributions to Canarian music and local culture. Later in the evening, attendees can look forward to the presentation of “El Rey del Timple” and a concert homage at the majestic Palacio de Congresos in Puerto del Rosario, enriching the community’s connection to their rich musical heritage.

Through these events, the essence of Casimiro Camacho López is set to resonate, reminding everyone of the beauty of tradition, music, and lasting friendships that shape the tapestry of cultural identity. Each note played on the timple serves as a homage to a man whose passion for music continues to inspire new generations.
