CDTI Invests in Ysios’ InceptionBio Fund to Foster Biotech Company Development

The landscape of biotechnology in Spain is set to undergo a significant transformation with the recent investment by the SICC Innvierte fund of CDTI Innovación in InceptionBio. This fund is dedicated to promoting the establishment of biotechnology companies and advancing early-stage technology transfer projects.

This investment underscores CDTI Innovación’s commitment to accelerating technology transfer and fostering the creation of new technology-based companies that possess high growth potential. The initiative aims to bolster the competitiveness of the Spanish R&D system, positioning it as a leader in the biotech sector.

INCEPTIONBIO INNVIERTE, FCRE (InceptionBio) is a newly launched fund by Ysios Capital, a prominent European venture capital manager specializing in life sciences. The fund is designed to support the creation of biotech companies and the development of early-stage projects, focusing on innovative solutions that address pressing medical needs.

The first closing of the fund occurred in March, with CDTI Innovación participating through Innvierte, committing €70.56 million. This substantial backing highlights the confidence in InceptionBio’s mission and the potential for growth within the Spanish biotech ecosystem.

InceptionBio aims to identify, develop, and build new companies grounded in excellent scientific research, with a particular emphasis on Spain. The fund will primarily invest in technology transfer projects and early-stage companies, working closely with universities, research centers, and entrepreneurs to transform scientific discoveries into impactful therapies.

The strategy of InceptionBio is multifaceted. It combines the creation of new companies from scientific assets developed in academic institutions with the identification and attraction of international assets that can be developed in Spain. This approach not only strengthens the national ecosystem but also positions Spain as a reference hub for biotechnology.

Currently, InceptionBio has a pipeline of investment opportunities that are in an advanced stage of analysis. As part of its deployment plan, the fund aims to establish at least three new biotech companies by 2026, showcasing its proactive approach to fostering innovation.

The collaboration with CDTI Innovación through Innvierte reinforces public-private partnerships in a critical area for the development of the Spanish biotech ecosystem. This partnership is expected to accelerate technology transfer, encourage the creation of high-growth technology-based companies, and enhance the competitiveness of the Spanish R&D system.
