The intersection of biotechnology and artificial intelligence is revolutionizing research and development, particularly in the agri-food sector. A standout example is MOA BIOTECH, S.L. (MOA Foodtech), based in Navarre, which is redefining the industry by creating sustainable, natural, and nutritious food products without the need for traditional arable land.
MOA Foodtech has developed a unique platform that leverages AI and biotechnology to produce high-value ingredients through the upcycling of by-products. This innovative model not only integrates a portfolio of proprietary ingredients but also collaborates with strategic partners to develop tailored solutions.
At the heart of this innovation is MOA Foodtech’s patented AI tool, Albatros. This cutting-edge technology enables the selection of the most suitable microorganism for fermenting specific by-products, resulting in microbial biomass that boasts exceptional nutritional value, high digestibility, and minimal environmental impact—all while being free from allergens.
CDTI Innovación, through its Innvierte initiative, has invested €674,000 in MOA Foodtech, alongside Swanlaab Innvierte Agrifood Tech, FCR. This investment underscores the commitment to supporting companies that are transforming the food sector by providing sustainable ingredients.
Swanlaab Innvierte Agri Food Tech
SWANLAAB INNVIERTE AGRIFOOD TECH, FCRE, is Spain’s first venture capital fund dedicated to Agri-Food Tech, managed by SWANLAAB VENTURE FACTORY, SGEIC, S.A. This fund was established to convert innovation into competitive products and services, enabling the agri-food sector to meet both global and local challenges across various domains, including primary production, food processing, logistics, distribution, and retail.
Swanlaab Venture Factory stands out in the Spanish venture capital landscape, with a team that brings over 20 years of investment experience across diverse sectors, including B2B software and agrifood-tech. The team comprises professionals who have founded and led startups, managed renowned VC funds, and supported the launch of over 200 companies as advisors and consultants, all with a mission to help Spanish entrepreneurs thrive on a global scale.
Innvierte
Innvierte is an initiative designed to foster business innovation by promoting venture capital investment in technology-based or innovative companies. This program operates through the closed-end investment company Innvierte Economía Sostenible SICC S.M.E., S.A., which is self-managed and overseen by the National Securities Market Commission, with CDTI Innovación as the sole shareholder.
To date, CDTI Innovación has committed €3.4785 billion through Innvierte across 61 investment vehicles, directly investing €866.1 million in 197 companies through its co-investment line. This initiative is part of the broader Spanish Strategy for Science, Technology, and Innovation 2021–2027, which aims to drive growth and impact across the R&D landscape.

The Centre for the Development of Technology and Innovation (CDTI E.P.E.) serves as the innovation agency for the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. Its mission is to promote technological innovation within the business sector, enabling Spanish companies to transform scientific and technical knowledge into competitive, sustainable, and inclusive growth.
