Clear Skies and Cooling Temperatures Anticipated for Monday in the Canaries as Dust Conditions Start to Improve

Weather Update: Clear Skies and Temperature Changes in the Canary Islands

As we look ahead to Monday, the Canary Islands are set to enjoy generally clear skies, with a welcome easing of haze conditions. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this haze may linger longer in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, but overall, residents can expect a pleasant day ahead.

Temperature Changes

Temperatures across the islands are predicted to decline slightly to moderately. In low-lying areas, the drop could be quite noticeable. For instance, Lanzarote is expected to see a maximum temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius, while El Hierro may experience a cooler minimum of just 14 degrees Celsius. This shift in temperature will provide a refreshing break from the warmer days we’ve been accustomed to.

Wind Conditions

Wind patterns will play a significant role in the weather on Monday. Expect moderate winds blowing from the west, with stronger gusts in the southeastern and northwestern extremes, as well as in elevated areas of the mountainous islands. Notably, El Teide may experience very strong gusts overnight, adding a bit of excitement to the weather dynamics.

Mainland Weather Outlook

While the Canary Islands enjoy a respite from heat, the rest of mainland Spain will see temperatures on the rise. Highs are expected to reach 32ºC in cities like Zaragoza, Badajoz, and Sevilla, while Murcia and Lleida will not be far behind at 31ºC. However, this warmth comes with a caveat: instability is forecasted for the northeastern peninsula, which could lead to some unpredictable weather.

Storm Warnings

Regions such as Aragón, Cataluña, Navarra, and La Rioja are under a yellow alert due to anticipated storms around midday. In Cataluña, a rainfall alert is also in effect, with accumulations potentially reaching 20 liters per square meter. Residents in these areas should prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions.

Weather Alerts in the Canary Islands

In the Canary Islands, weather alerts are activated for various climatic phenomena. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are under alerts for dust in suspension, while Tenerife faces warnings for strong wind gusts that could reach up to 70 km/h. It’s essential for residents and visitors to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

Regional Instability

The instability affecting the northeastern peninsula will lead to evolving cloud cover and storms in regions like the Ebro Valley, Navarra, the Iberian System, and the Pyrenees. These storms may bring hail and very strong gusts of wind, resulting in heavy showers, particularly in the eastern Pyrenees.

Stable Conditions Elsewhere

In contrast, much of the rest of Spain will experience stable weather characterized by generally clear skies or high clouds. Coastal areas along the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts may see periods of low morning clouds, but overall, the weather will remain pleasant.

Dust Intrusions and Temperature Changes on the Peninsula

Throughout Monday, Aemet anticipates a dust intrusion into the Peninsula from the west, coinciding with the easing of dust conditions in the Canary Islands. This will likely lead to a decrease in maximum temperatures along the Galician coast and in the Ampurdán region, while minimal changes are expected elsewhere. Maximum temperatures are forecasted to reach 30ºC in Granada, Jaén, Albacete, and Toledo, while cities like Cáceres, Ciudad Real, Córdoba, Logroño, and Ourense will hover around 29ºC.

Minimum Temperatures and Wind Patterns

Minimum temperatures are set to rise in the interior of the Basque Country, with Bilbao at 12ºC and San Sebastián at 13ºC. In the Canary Islands, however, temperatures will generally decline, with some areas experiencing drops of more than 6 degrees. Tenerife is expected to reach a maximum of 22ºC, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will see around 21ºC.

Winds will be light and variable inland, while coastal areas will experience a breezy regime. Moderate easterly winds are expected in the Strait, and in the Canary Islands, winds will predominantly come from the moderate west, adding a refreshing touch to the air.

Stay tuned for more updates as the weather continues to evolve!
