Nightclub Closure in Puerto del Rosario: A Response to Safety Concerns
On the early morning of February 9, 2024, officers from the Local Police of Puerto del Rosario and the National Police took significant action by temporarily closing a nightclub in the city center. This decision was prompted by several alarming reports regarding the presence of underage individuals inside the venue.
Immediate Response to Reports
The police’s intervention began after receiving multiple complaints about minors frequenting the establishment. Responding swiftly, the officers verified the situation on-site, leading to the identification of a staggering thirty-eight minors. The police promptly took steps to reunite these young individuals with their parents, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Concerns Over Safety Regulations
In addition to protecting the minors, the officers discovered several troubling safety violations within the nightclub. It was found that construction work was underway inside the venue, with scaffolding and materials improperly stored near the dance area, separated only by plastic sheeting and metal barriers. Additionally, two small bottles of carbon dioxide were found on the premises, lacking any necessary protective measures. Such findings posed a serious risk to the safety of all patrons, highlighting stark inadequacies in how the venue was managed.
Overcrowding Issues
The situation was further exacerbated by the discovery of severe overcrowding. The police counted over 400 individuals inside the nightclub, well above the established capacity limits. When officers requested the club management to present the required permits and documentation—including approvals for construction work and proof of mandatory civil liability insurance—none could be provided. This lack of compliance with regulations underscored the venue’s inability to operate safely and legally.
Legal Actions and Continued Oversight
Following the safe return of the minors to their guardians, the police proceeded with closing the nightclub and initiated formal proceedings against the establishment for severe infractions of the Law 7/2011, regulating classified activities and public performances. The case has been referred to the urban planning department at the Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario for further investigation and disciplinary action.
In a further step towards ensuring the welfare of minors, the police also informed the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office of Puerto del Rosario. By doing so, they aimed to address the broader implications of minors being exposed to such environments.
Support from Local Government
The local government has voiced its strong support for the collaborative efforts of the Local Police and National Police. Their work is not solely focused on enforcing laws but also emphasizes the importance of ensuring the safety of minors and the community as a whole. This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role law enforcement plays in maintaining public safety and enforcing regulations that protect vulnerable populations.
Through their prompt and decisive actions, the authorities in Puerto del Rosario have showcased their commitment to creating a safer environment for all residents, especially the younger members of the community.
