Revitalizing Heritage: New Developments at the Hornos de Cal

Recently, Puerto del Rosario has witnessed significant enhancements with the completion of renovation works at the Centro de Interpretación de los Hornos de Cal, a project that showcases the rich historical fabric of the area. The initiative, managed by the public company Gestión de Proyectos Turísticos de Canarias (Gesprotur), has brought together an investment totaling €200,332 to breathe new life into this iconic site.

The renovation undertaking is divided into two main components. The first lot, which cost €62,568, focused on establishing a low voltage electrical line. This critical infrastructure now supplies power to both the municipal Tourist Information Office and the adjacent souvenir shop, facilitating a better experience for visitors and residents alike.

The second part of the project saw a more extensive investment of €137,764. This phase involved comprehensive refurbishment of the surrounding area and the museum building itself, including the installation of public lighting across the entire complex of cal ovens. This enhancement not only improves visibility but also elevates the aesthetic appeal of the site, making it more inviting for tourists.

Jéssica de León, the Regional Minister of Tourism and Employment, recently visited the site and highlighted the significant cultural value of the Hornos de Cal. During her visit, she stated, “With the completion of these works, we are not only beautifying the area but also revitalizing an important part of the El Charco neighborhood. This enhancement adds value to a location that holds great significance for the social life of Puerto del Rosario.”

Moreover, the Minister emphasized the Centro de Interpretación as a vital reference spot for visitors. It aims to educate them about the unique architecture of the cal ovens and the historical importance of this industry to the island’s economy. This emphasis on cultural education is essential, as it fosters a deeper appreciation for local heritage among both travelers and residents.

In response to the revitalization efforts, David de Vera, the Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, expressed gratitude to the regional department for their commitment to enhancing this infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of adapting the lighting in the area, which serves to solidify the center’s position as a prominent attraction for tourists. The collective efforts aim to create a robust tourist experience that honors the local traditions while also promoting sustainable economic growth.

The restoration of the Hornos de Cal not only represents a step towards conserving Puerto del Rosario’s heritage but also invites a broader audience to engage with the rich history of the region. The careful combination of modernization and respect for tradition serves as a model for future projects aimed at preserving cultural sites.
