Julia Puranen’s journey to Fuerteventura was equally serendipitous. With a mother who was a writer and a father who played music, creativity ran in her veins. Although she studied photography, her passion naturally gravitated toward textile design, influenced by her great-aunt’s celebrated works. The call of the islands wasn’t one she expected. “I had no plans to stay, but the island chose me,” she laughs. Today, she operates a textile workshop in Lajares alongside Greta, embodying the spirit of collaboration that defines Lapa Studio.

Cris Girona’s story is laced with spontaneity as well. Originally from bustling Barcelona, she arrived in Fuerteventura to take a surfing course and fell in love with both the island and a local surf instructor. What began as a vacation evolved into a new life, complete with a family and artisanal accessory lines. Similarly, Bili Puig de la Bellacasa found herself drawn into the island’s embrace. Upon her arrival, she pondered about the people inhabiting the quaint villages, eventually making one of them her home.

Lapa Studio was born from the intense camaraderie these women shared, all catalyzed by a casual conversation over coffee. “We wanted to create a platform to showcase the island’s talent—artists, designers, and artisans alike,” Julia explains. Their drive was palpable, even leading them to negotiate the space for their studio after just two cups of coffee.

Inaugurated in 2018, Lapa Studio quickly established itself as a vital part of the island’s artistic community.
