A team from Tibicena Arqueología y Patrimonio, led by Marco Antonio Moreno Benítez, has unearthed the original walls of the Franciscan convent of San Buenaventura, founded in 1413 right after the conquest. Through meticulous analysis of the lime used in its construction—conducted in laboratories in Barcelona and Poland—the researchers have confirmed the existence of the original church erected during the early years of colonization. This revelation sheds light not only on the spiritual and cultural foundations of Fuerteventura but also positions the convent as a key heritage site, capable of rewriting parts of the archipelago’s history.
A Rescued Legacy
The excavation project kicked off in 2018, supported by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. The last campaign in 2022, spurred by heavy rains that revealed hidden structures, provided a clearer image of the original building. The unearthed structures not only exhibit the grandeur of the complex but also showcase its deep symbolic significance as a testament to the post-conquest era.
