Family Reveals Disturbing Details of ‘Disastrous’ Holiday Resort After Suffering Severe Illness

Disturbing Reports from a Popular Holiday Resort: A Family’s Nightmare

In a troubling turn of events, another British family has come forward with alarming accounts of illness during their stay at the Occidental Jandia Playa Resort in Fuerteventura, a popular destination in the Canary Islands. This follows the tragic case of 70-year-old Leslie Green, who passed away in 2024 after contracting salmonella during his holiday at the same resort. The inquest revealed that his death was linked to partially cooked chicken, raising serious concerns about the resort’s food safety practices.

A Family Celebration Turns Sour

Joyce Arandall, celebrating her 60th birthday with ten family members, described their experience as a “disaster.” Before Joyce even arrived, two family members, Rachel and Andrew Constable, fell ill with severe symptoms including nausea, sickness, and diarrhea. Andrew described his discomfort as feeling like his stomach was “going to explode,” while Rachel noted that her symptoms persisted throughout their two-week stay.

Rachel recounted, “After a few agonizing days, my symptoms finally began to ease, but I still felt nauseous and drained for the rest of the holiday. I was sluggish, lethargic, and overwhelmingly tired. For several days, I could eat hardly anything.”

Alarming Hygiene Practices

The family reported numerous hygiene issues at the resort. Rachel observed that the restaurant staff did not wear hairnets or gloves until after they complained, and even then, it was only for a single day. The food quality was equally concerning; one day, they were served cold, congealed lasagna, and on another occasion, frozen spring rolls. Most alarmingly, they were served raw chicken, which Rachel described as a glaring sign of the hotel’s negligence.

Joyce echoed these sentiments, stating, “The holiday was a disaster from the moment we stepped foot in the hotel. Our room wasn’t ready at check-in, and when we finally got in, we were given the wrong ones. This was frustrating because we had booked a disability-friendly room for my elderly mother.”

Ongoing Health Issues

Joyce and her 81-year-old mother, Lavine, arrived two days later, only to develop similar symptoms within three days. Even after returning to the UK, Joyce continued to experience health issues, with the cause of her illness remaining officially unknown. “Even to this day, I’m still not right. I’ve seen my GP and still need to stay close to a toilet due to ongoing symptoms,” she lamented.

The family’s excitement for a long-awaited celebration turned into a distressing ordeal, leaving them with lasting health concerns and emotional scars. Joyce expressed her disappointment, stating, “We were shocked to learn someone died after staying at this hotel in 2024. To see similar issues still happening is appalling.”

Legal Action and Expert Opinions

Jennifer Hodgson, an expert international serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, is representing the family. She highlighted the alarming nature of the complaints, which mirror previous reports about the same hotel. “These descriptions are similar to complaints we received previously about the same hotel, which is particularly alarming given a former guest there in 2024 died after contracting Salmonella,” she stated.

Hodgson emphasized the potential long-term complications associated with gastric illnesses like salmonella, which can manifest anywhere from eight to 72 hours after exposure. “While symptoms usually last 4 to 7 days, they can cause long-term complications and, in severe cases, even be fatal,” she warned.

Call for Action

The legal team is committed to uncovering the truth behind these illnesses and ensuring that future holidaymakers are protected from similar experiences. “If our investigation uncovers any issues, action must be taken to protect future holidaymakers from enduring the same experience,” Hodgson asserted.

The family’s ordeal raises critical questions about food safety and hygiene standards at the Occidental Jandia Playa Resort. As they seek answers, they hope their story will encourage others who have faced similar issues to come forward.

LADbible has reached out to the Occidental Jandia Playa Resort for comment, but the ongoing concerns about the establishment’s practices remain a pressing issue for both the affected families and potential future guests.
