FEAGA 2026 Kicks Off with Strong Participation from the Sector and a Focus on Innovation

Celebrating Heritage and Innovation at FEAGA 2026

On April 16, 2026, the Feria Agrícola, Ganadera y Pesquera de Fuerteventura (FEAGA) launched its 38th edition, showcasing the thriving agricultural, livestock, and fishing sectors of the Canary Islands. The inauguration was marked by heartfelt tributes to an essential part of Fuerteventura’s heritage: the livestock commissioners from Antigua and Betancuria, alongside the DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida) Queso Majorero. These acknowledgments reflect the deep-rooted tradition of local agriculture and the remarkable individuals who have dedicated their lives to sustaining it.

A Gathering of Leaders

The event attracted significant attendance from various stakeholders, including local officials and government representatives. Notables such as Lola García, the President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, attended the opening ceremony. Their presence underscores the importance of the agricultural sector in Fuerteventura’s economic landscape.

A Reflection of Community Spirit

In her remarks, García emphasized that FEAGA is more than just an event; it represents the hard work, traditions, and resilience of the local community. “FEAGA reflects our local products and traditions, and the effort of those sustaining the primary sector,” she stated. This year’s edition comes at a particularly vibrant moment, with recent rains leading Fuerteventura to “re-green” and invigorate agricultural efforts.

Addressing Challenges and Providing Support

García highlighted the support from the Cabildo, which has allocated more than 9 million euros in aid over the past year to bolster sector competitiveness. This ongoing support is crucial, especially in light of international conflicts that impact the local economy and agricultural activities. By providing essential assistance, Fuerteventura aims to meet the pressing challenges faced by its agricultural community.

Innovation Takes Center Stage

This year’s FEAGA introduces an innovative approach to engagement and accessibility. The event has embraced technology, featuring live streaming of key activities and a more connected experience for attendees. A QR code will facilitate access to digital content, ensuring that even those unable to attend in person remain connected. Provisions for individuals with reduced mobility further enhance inclusivity, with transport solutions to ease access to the fair.

The Emphasis on Agriculture

In his speech, Clavijo reaffirmed the central role of agriculture in Fuerteventura’s development. The fair serves as a platform to showcase the potential and adaptability of the local agricultural sector. He stressed the significance of water management and infrastructure improvements to secure the future of Fuerteventura’s primary sector, acknowledging the coordinated efforts between the Cabildo and the Department of Territorial Policy in tackling the ongoing water crisis.

A Networking Hub for Stakeholders

Enrique Pérez, the Insular Councilor of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, acknowledged the significant collaboration among professionals and communities within the sector. He noted the fair’s dual purpose: to facilitate networking and to analyze ways to improve and promote the primary sector. With over 200 stands featuring producers, commercial entities, and artisan markets, FEAGA offers a comprehensive representation of what Fuerteventura has to offer.

Recognizing Dedicated Individuals

During the inauguration, the achievements of long-serving commissioners were celebrated. Tomás Acosta Cabrera and Vicente Hernández Santana were honored for their fifty years of dedication to maintaining coastal livestock, a practice recognized as Cultural Heritage of Fuerteventura. Alongside this tribute, the Council Regulator of Queso Majorero was celebrated on its thirtieth anniversary, highlighting its commitment to ensuring high standards in cheese production.

Celebrating the Future

As the day unfolded, officials took time to celebrate collaborations with community organizations such as ADISFUER, marking the spirit of teamwork that defines FEAGA. With an engaging program designed for all ages, including educational workshops for children, FEAGA 2026 offers not just a marketplace for products but also a celebration of Fuerteventura’s agricultural culture, encouraging innovation while honoring tradition.

Through events like FEAGA, Fuerteventura demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, community spirit, and the continuous evolution of its agricultural heritage—an essential part of the island’s identity and future.
