View of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

In the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, the construction activity is bustling far beyond just Don Quijote Street. The recent announcements made by local officials highlight the commitment towards addressing the ongoing housing crisis. Thirty-five residences have already been awarded in Bernegal, with an additional twenty-four planned in Rosa Vila. These projects complement the ongoing construction efforts in the urban center of Corralejo within the municipality of La Oliva. According to President García, the Cabildo is actively collaborating with other municipalities to expand housing options across the island, focusing especially on rehabilitating existing housing stock.

The Government of the Canary Islands Targets Over 2,000 Public Housing Units

During a recent presentation, the regional minister Pablo Rodríguez emphasized that the Canarian government has prioritized housing like never before, citing a strong commitment to mobilizing public funds to combat the housing emergency. He stated, “The housing emergency is the principal issue families face in the Canary Islands.” To this end, Rodríguez announced that over 2,000 public housing units are set to be constructed throughout the archipelago. Notably, an additional housing promotion is expected to be awarded in Rosa Vila before the end of the year.

Mayor David de Vera expressed his enthusiasm for the commencement of these projects as part of a broader strategy, stating, “Today we celebrate the groundbreaking in Don Quijote, marking the beginning of other awarded promotions that will provide necessary alternative housing to meet social demand in Fuerteventura.” Concurrently, María Jesús de la Cruz, the island director for AGE, praised the initiative as “an exemplar of collaboration among various administrations”, addressing the housing deficit plaguing both the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura in particular.

Energy Efficiency and Diverse Design in Housing

The development projected on Don Quijote Street is designed with an emphasis on functionality and sustainability. Each of the 47 residential units will include a garage, a storage room, and a fully equipped kitchen. The layout caters to a variety of needs, featuring 5 one-bedroom homes, 10 two-bedroom units, 26 three-bedroom apartments (of which 2 are adapted for persons with reduced mobility), 6 four-bedroom houses, and 1 six-bedroom residence. This diversity in housing types reflects a proactive approach to accommodate various family sizes and demographics, including larger families.

Furthermore, the design of the building adheres to rigorous energy efficiency standards and aims to minimize CO₂ emissions, in line with criteria set by the European NextGeneration funds that are co-financing the project. The initiation of this construction represents a concrete, institutional response to a critical housing access issue that all involved administrations recognize as one of the main social challenges facing both Fuerteventura and the wider Canary Islands.
