Cabildo de Fuerteventura Celebrates International Day of Persons with Functional Diversity with Inclusive Leisure Activities

On December 3rd, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura will honor the International Day of Persons with Functional Diversity by hosting a vibrant day of activities aimed at promoting inclusivity and accessibility. This celebration takes place at the Centro Insular de Juventud (the former Popular University of Puerto del Rosario) and runs from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

A Collaborative Effort for Inclusivity

This event is a testament to the collaborative spirit of various organizations committed to supporting individuals with diverse functional needs. Partnerships with Adivia (the Association of People with Visual, Auditory, Physical, and Psycho-social Disabilities), Senderos sin Barreras, Play and Train, Fuerte Trail, and Fuerteventura Vida Parkinson No Limits underscore the island’s dedication to improving quality of life for all its residents.

Carmen Alonso, the Cabildo’s Accessibility Councillor, expressed gratitude towards these collaborating associations for their continuous efforts throughout the year. Through such initiatives, they aim to enhance the lives of people and dismantle barriers to accessibility.

Engaging Activities Tailored for All

The program promises a plethora of engaging activities designed to provide fun and education for all participants. One of the highlights will be a gymkhana focused on accessibility. This interactive game encourages everyone to participate regardless of their abilities, emphasizing the importance of inclusion in leisure activities.

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to engage with handbikes—adapted bicycles that allow individuals with mobility impairments to experience cycling firsthand. Workshops on using joëlette chairs, which cater to individuals with limited mobility, will also be conducted. These activities aim to empower participants and highlight the enjoyment of being active, no matter the circumstances.

For those seeking a more holistic experience, Qi Gong and boxing sessions will be available. These sports not only promote physical fitness but also serve as therapeutic practices, enhancing mental well-being and fostering community spirit.

Embracing New Technologies with eSports Initiatives

In a forward-thinking move, the PFAE Fuerteventura Gaming will set up an informative stand to engage with visitors about their goals related to promoting eSports on the island. This initiative is especially relevant in today’s digital age, where technology plays a fundamental role in social connections and employment opportunities.

Participants will also have the chance to explore accessible new technologies in the video game industry. Through engaging demonstrations, attendees can experience virtual reality with specially designed VR glasses, making technological advancements more inclusive.

Global Significance of the Day

The International Day of Persons with Functional Diversity is celebrated worldwide every December 3rd. This day aims to raise awareness and advocate for equal rights and social integration for individuals with diverse functional needs. It aligns with the United Nations’ global action plan dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

Through this event, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura not only commemorates the day but actively engages the community in discussions and actions geared towards inclusivity. By fostering a space where everyone can enjoy their rights equally, the island takes significant strides towards a more accessible future for all.
