Fuerteventura Hosts Filming of Canadian Film ‘Le Sablier’ by Oscar-Nominated Director Kim Nguyen

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, the island recently played host to the filming of “The Hourglass,” directed by Canadian filmmaker Kim Nguyen, who received an Academy Award nomination in 2013. This international feature film, produced by Item 7, is predominantly shot in La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario over a span of 27 days. French co-producer Noodles Production and Fuerteventura-based Fasten Films assisted with production services.

“The Hourglass” draws inspiration from the real-life story of Édith Blais, a Canadian woman who endured 450 days of captivity by jihadist forces in the Sahara Desert alongside her Italian partner, Luca Tacchetto. This gripping narrative is expected to resonate deeply with audiences.

Lola García, president of the Cabildo, emphasized the immense potential that such high-profile productions hold for the island. The film is set to contribute approximately 1.6 million euros to the local economy. Nereida Calero, CEO of the Fuerteventura Film Commission, noted that this project fosters economic activity and job creation, estimating that “The Hourglass” will generate around 50 job opportunities, both permanent and temporary, in Fuerteventura.

Overall, the filming of “The Hourglass” not only enriches the cultural landscape of Fuerteventura but also reinforces the island’s growing reputation as a dynamic location for international film productions.
