Digital Community Building: The Cabildo’s ‘Telecentros Gamificación’ Initiative

In a groundbreaking move, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has launched an exciting project titled ‘Telecentros Gamificación.’ This initiative aims to convert telecenters and youth spaces across the island into vibrant hubs for digital leisure, creativity, and gaming education. Spearheaded by the Department of New Technologies, led by Carmen Alonso, the project responds to the growing popularity of video games and seeks to harness their potential for community building and skill development.

Diverse Activities for All Ages

The ‘Telecentros Gamificación’ initiative offers a rich array of activities catering to a wide audience. It encompasses esports leagues, gaming workshops, virtual reality experiences, competitive board games, and engaging role-playing games. Notable highlights include the Inter-Telecentros Gaming League, featuring global rankings in popular titles such as Rocket League, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and Fortnite. Participants can accumulate points via weekly challenges from various municipalities, culminating in an exciting face-to-face finale.

Additionally, the program fosters learning and friendly competition through organized tournaments for card games like Lorcana and Pokémon TCG. Unique initiatives such as a “Gym Leader” mode allow each telecenter to act as a gym that players must conquer to earn medals, creating a rich tapestry of engagement across the island.

Bringing Retro Gaming to Life

In a delightful nod to nostalgia, the project includes retro gaming sessions featuring classic consoles. Participants can take part in speedrunning challenges, learn to create mini-games using platforms like Scratch, Godot, or Roblox Studio, and dive into workshops focused on content creation and streaming. The initiative doesn’t shy away from innovative experiences; attendees can partake in virtual reality adventures and live-action role-playing games within digital escape rooms themed around classics like Minecraft or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.

Kickoff Events: ‘Día Gaming’

As a precursor to the broader initiative, the Cabildo is setting the stage with several “Día Gaming” events tailored for the youth, families, and gaming enthusiasts. These open-day gatherings will feature competitions in popular games like Clash Royale, Fortnite, Mario Kart, and FC24, complemented by creative workshops on topics such as 3D printing and game development using Roblox Studio.

The inaugural events will be hosted at several venues:

  • Centro Cultural de Lajares on February 27 from 4 PM to 8 PM
  • Centro Cultural de El Matorral on February 28 from 11 AM to 6 PM
  • Casa de la Juventud de Morro Jable on March 7 from 11 AM to 6 PM

Participants are encouraged to pre-register and find detailed information on the Cabildo’s official site: cabildofuer.es.

Engaging and Fun Learning Spaces

Each event will feature designated areas for tournaments, introductory workshops, retro gaming zones, and fun activities such as El Tablero del Jugón—a live trivia game centered around gamer anecdotes and tasks. The objective is to not just facilitate competition but to create a leisurely and enjoyable atmosphere that caters to all facets of gaming culture.

A Vision for Inclusivity and Community

Carmen Alonso emphasizes that this initiative is designed to make gaming culture accessible to everyone on the island. She envisions a scenario where youths, regardless of their location in Fuerteventura, are empowered to compete, learn programming skills, dive into streaming, or simply share their passion for gaming in a safe, supported environment.

Alonso fervently invites families, youth, and gaming aficionados to attend the upcoming ‘Día Gaming’ events in Lajares, Morro Jable, and El Matorral. These occasions promise to be a fantastic opportunity for community bonding, collaboration, and a celebration of digital talent.

Future Prospects: Building on Success

Looking ahead, the Telecentros Gamificación initiative will continue to expand, with a comprehensive calendar for the Inter-Telecentros Gaming League and numerous other activities laid out for the months to come. An overarching goal is to organize a grand island-wide final that recognizes the contributions and efforts of all telecenters involved.

The project is also thankful for the collaboration of local governments, including Puerto del Rosario, Pájara, and La Oliva, whose support has been instrumental in bringing this initiative to fruition. Each step taken through the ‘Telecentros Gamificación’ project promises to not only enrich the digital landscape of Fuerteventura but also transform its community into a dynamic and inclusive gaming culture.
