Fostering Financial Literacy Among Fuerteventura’s Youth

On a recent Tuesday, the island of Fuerteventura celebrated an important milestone in financial education, as the president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret López, and the youth and education counselor, María Saavedra, presented awards to secondary education centers that participated in the provincial phase of the II National Audiovisual Communication Competition on Financial Education. The event was held at the Center for Youth, highlighting the island’s commitment to equipping its youth with essential economic knowledge and skills.

A Celebration of Talent and Effort

During the ceremony, which took place in a vibrant auditorium, awards were distributed to various schools, including IES Jandía, which emerged as the provincial winner, and IES Puerto del Rosario, recognized as a finalist. The event drew a notable crowd, including esteemed figures such as Alcibiades Trancho Lemes, the dean of the Official College of Economists of Las Palmas. His presence underscored the significance of promoting financial understanding among students.

In his address, President Lloret emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives that enhance education not only in general but also in crucial areas like financial literacy. He remarked that given the current global financial challenges, this form of education is both timely and critical. The emphasis on blending financial information with new technologies was especially well-received, showcasing a modern approach to learning that resonates with today’s digital generation.

Acknowledging Artistic and Academic Excellence

Counselor María Saavedra praised the quality of submissions from all participating institutions. Her remarks highlighted the impressive content and artistic presentation of the projects, which explored themes such as sustainable and circular economies. These concepts, though complex, were made accessible and relatable through students’ creative expressions, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical understanding.

Saavedra expressed hope for increased participation in future contests, hinting at a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive financial education at the secondary level. Alcibiades Trancho Lemes, the Dean of the Official College of Economists, emphasized the multifaceted benefits of financial education, particularly for young people transitioning into the workforce. Mentioning the Canary Islands’ unique economic context, Trancho Lemes highlighted the importance of understanding local economic policies, such as the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF). He insisted that citizens need to be informed about how these regulations affect their daily lives. By fostering a culture of financial education, students can become more aware of their island’s economic landscape, preparing them to participate competently in both local and global markets.

A National Initiative

This recent competition is part of a broader national initiative organized by the General Council of Economists of Spain, with support from the Official College of Economists of Las Palmas. The contest invited participation from eight centers across Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, focusing on the theme ‘How to be sustainable and make it profitable.’ The overarching goal is to inspire students to engage with economic topics and develop critical skills in financial management.

During the ceremony, the Dean presented the president and the counselor with books authored by Salvador Miranda, director of the REF Chair at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. These texts serve as valuable resources for understanding the subtleties of the REF and the implications it holds for students and citizens of the islands.

As Fuerteventura embraces this new educational era, the commitment of local leaders, educators, and students to enhancing financial literacy stands as a testament to their vision for a better-informed and economically savvy future.
