Inclusive Leisure to Celebrate International Day of Persons with Functional Diversity

El Cabildo de Fuerteventura celebra el Día Internacional de las Personas con Diversidad Funcional con una serie de actividades en el Centro Insular de Juventud

On Saturday, December 2nd, from 09:00 to 13:00, El Cabildo de Fuerteventura will be hosting a meaningful event to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Functional Diversity at the Centro Insular de Juventud, formerly known as the Universidad Popular of Puerto del Rosario. This comprehensive event aims to promote awareness, inclusion, and support for individuals with diverse abilities.

The day will feature the participation of various local organizations dedicated to supporting people with disabilities, including the Asociación de Personas con Discapacidad Visual, Auditiva, Física y Psíquica (Adivia) of Fuerteventura, Senderos sin Barreras, Play and Train, Fuerte Trail, and Fuerteventura Vida Parkinson No Limits. Their collective efforts illustrate a community commitment to fostering accessibility and improving the lives of all residents.

Attendees can look forward to a wide array of engaging activities designed to promote inclusiveness and accessibility. A highlight of the event will be an exciting gymkhana focused on accessibility challenges, allowing participants to understand the importance of barriers removal in everyday life. Adaptive cycling sessions using handbikes, training on how to assemble and operate joëlette wheelchairs, and sessions in Qi Gong and boxing are also scheduled. These activities are not only physically engaging but also serve to empower individuals through experiential learning.

Carmen Alonso, the Accessibility Councillor of El Cabildo de Fuerteventura, expresses deep gratitude to the various associations collaborating on this initiative. Alonso emphasizes that these efforts are aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with diverse abilities, enabling them to partake in inclusive activities throughout the island. In addition to the activities centered around functional diversity, the event will feature the PFAE Fuerteventura Gaming initiative from the Cabildo. They will have an informational stand to promote employment opportunities and raise awareness about the eSports sector in Fuerteventura. Participants can also experience the exciting realm of accessible new technologies within the gaming industry through hands-on activities involving virtual reality goggles, making technology an integral part of this inclusive celebration.
