Spain’s National Emergency: Wildfires Rage in Madrid and Ávila
Spain has declared a national emergency in the community of Madrid and the province of Ávila due to the alarming spread of intense wildfires. As flames continue to burn out of control, this year is shaping up to be one of the most devastating wildfire seasons on record for the region.

In Spain, the area burned this year has already doubled the annual average, while France is experiencing a fire season six times more destructive than usual.

Remarkably, Ecofire can also be applied preventively to vegetation, creating an insulating layer that blocks heat and oxygen, thereby preventing combustion at temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit).
Early Detection: Predifire
Once a wildfire ignites, it becomes increasingly challenging to control. This is where Predifire comes into play. Supported by the University of Córdoba, this early-warning system employs artificial intelligence, sensors, and autonomous drones to detect fire outbreaks when they are still small. The goal is to reduce response times and facilitate early intervention, ultimately saving lives and resources.
Monitoring Systems: SenForFire
Another innovative project is SenForFire, a collaborative effort involving the Spanish National Research Council and the University of Extremadura. This initiative aims to enhance prevention and early detection through a network of low-cost smart sensors. These devices monitor combustion-related gases, environmental variables, and weather conditions in real-time, providing crucial data that can predict the onset or progression of a fire.
Predictive Modeling: Wildfire Assessment Model
Spanish researchers have also developed a Wildfire Assessment Model funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. This AI-driven model utilizes neural networks to analyze atmospheric variables and satellite imagery to assess vegetation health. It estimates how far a fire might spread, how long it would take to control, and the resources needed for effective response in high-risk areas.
Public Safety Tools
In addition to these technological advancements, there are also tools available to help the public stay informed and safe. The Spanish government has launched an official Civil Protection app, which provides emergency information, warning maps, and access to emergency services.
Google Maps has also integrated a feature that triggers emergency alerts and displays wildfire perimeters in Spain. For real-time updates, Incendios España offers a platform that shows the locations of active wildfires across the country using satellite data.
