Exciting Developments at the Fuerteventura Artisan Fair 2026
The picturesque municipality of Antigua is gearing up for the most ambitious edition of the Feria Insular de Artesanía (Insular Artisan Fair) yet. On the horizon is an event teeming with vibrant experiences, enchanting artistry, and community spirit, providing both residents and visitors with a unique glimpse into Fuerteventura’s rich cultural tapestry.
Engaging Activities for Everyone
This year’s fair promises an array of activities designed to engage individuals of all ages. Attendees can look forward to live artisan workshops, where skilled craftspeople will showcase their talents. For families, children’s entertainment will keep the younger ones delighted and engaged. Moreover, enriching talks will delve into various aspects of local craftsmanship, enhancing attendees’ understanding of the artisan world.
A special highlight of the event will be the musical performances slated for the festival. The lineup includes popular local acts such as Sirinoke Folk, La Banda del Cuco, Los Cantadores, and the highly anticipated Taburiente, who will take the stage at midday on Sunday, May 10th, marking the fair’s closing day. Musical acts will undoubtedly elevate the festive atmosphere, making it a joyous occasion for all.
Increased Institutional Support
Marlene Figueroa, the third vice president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, spoke passionately about the importance of the event. Despite the absence of the Councilor for Crafts, Lolina Negrín, due to personal reasons, Figueroa emphasized that institutional financial backing for the fair has doubled since 2023. Specifically, the contribution from the Cabildo has surged from €35,000 to €100,000 this year, reflecting an unwavering commitment to support local artisans and crafts.
Antigua’s mayor, Matías Peña, confirmed these figures and expressed gratitude to Councilor Negrín, even extending condolences on the recent loss of her family member. Figueroa articulated that the fair is “a priority for Fuerteventura” and represents a vital showcase of the island’s cultural heritage. She warmly encouraged both locals and visitors to experience and support “this local product”, heralding the event as an opportunity for social and familial bonding.
Robust Investment and Participation
The municipality has also shown a significant commitment to the fair, with an additional €30,000 earmarked for the event, bringing the total budget to €250,000. Mayor Peña noted that without the dedicated efforts of the municipal staff who assist with the setup, the expenses would have likely exceeded €300,000.
Special appreciation was given to the collaboration between various municipal departments—including Culture, Works and Services, as well as Treasury—who have all worked diligently, even sacrificing weekends, to ensure that the fair’s preparations are executed smoothly.
This year’s celebration will showcase the work of over 200 exhibitors, featuring around 140 artisans and approximately 30 producers from the primary sector. The inclusion of an additional 30 stands within the institutional pavilion highlights the fair’s commitment to integrating artisan crafts with the primary sector, a vision that Mayor Peña has pursued since taking office.
In a forward-looking effort, Peña shared plans for a second artisan event—the Encuentro Artesano—set to occur in December, aimed at enhancing continuous support for the artisan community throughout the year.
Embracing Cultural Heritage
The Fuerteventura Artisan Fair is more than just an event; it is a celebration of the island’s cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and communal spirit. As preparations unfold, enthusiasm is building for what promises to be a memorable occasion that not only entertains but also uplifts and supports local talent. Through workshops, music, and community involvement, the fair stands as a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit of Fuerteventura.
