Juan Jiménez resigns as councilor of Puerto del Rosario “following an unfortunate accident”

Juan Jiménez Resigns as Councilor Following Traffic Accident

On Thursday, Juan Jiménez formally submitted his resignation as a councilor for the Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario, citing a “unfortunate traffic accident” as the impetus for his decision. The former mayor and current secretary of the local Socialist Party emphasized the necessity of stepping back from his public responsibilities due to a prolonged recovery ahead.

Reason for Resignation

In a heartfelt letter disseminated by the PSOE, Jiménez explained, “Due to the foreseeably long period of physical recovery I am undergoing, which requires peace and tranquility, I believe it is both necessary and advisable to remove myself from my public responsibilities and resign from my council position.” He highlighted that his decision was made with careful consideration and deep reflection about his capacity to fulfill his duties in an optimal manner given his current physical condition, which necessitates absolute rest and progressive rehabilitation.

Context of the Traffic Accident

The traffic incident, which Jiménez characterized as unfortunate, occurred in the early hours of the morning following what he described as a “long day of work related to cultural issues.” Specifically, he was involved in inspecting facilities at the Tetir library, part of a broader initiative aimed at revitalizing rural libraries. He also had discussions about an upcoming publication commemorating the centenary of Tetir’s transition from a municipal seat in 1925.

Inquiries from the opposition arose concerning the accident, particularly since a municipal vehicle was involved. As a result of the crash, Jiménez sustained injuries and is currently focused on his recovery.

Emergency Response

The Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad (CECOES) 112 reported that at 1:22 a.m. on Thursday of last week, they received notification of a vehicle overturning on the road known as Los Estancos. The incident underscored the challenges Jiménez faced in the aftermath, prompting his decision to step back from his role.

Reflection on Public Service

Reflecting further on his resignation, Jiménez remarked, “During a prolonged period, I will be operating at a minimum level,” which led him to conclude that a change was necessary. Previously holding the position of mayor, he reiterated, “I have decided to relinquish my status as a public official in the Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario, as I am not in suitable conditions to undertake the responsibilities I have assumed.”

Gratitude for Support

In his resignation letter, Jiménez expressed heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the institution for their ongoing support throughout his tenure as both mayor and deputy mayor. He emphasized that he would always cherish the collaborative spirit shared with his colleagues and the broader community.

Moreover, Jiménez acknowledged the outpouring of support from the local residents, stating, “I want to express my deep appreciation to the neighbors of this municipality, who have left an indelible mark on my service. It has been an honor and a source of pride to serve as your mayor.”

The Weight of Public Responsibility

In closing his thoughts, Jiménez remarked on the profound responsibilities that come with public service. He noted that representing the people is a significant duty that requires dedication and effort, values he has aimed to uphold during his time in office. His commitment to the community remains evident as he navigates this challenging period of recovery.
