Dale Harvey’s Great British Pub Crawl: A Journey of Passion and Perseverance

Dale Harvey, a dedicated pub enthusiast and member of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) national executive, has embarked on an extraordinary journey that began over four years ago. His Great British Pub Crawl, initially a simple hobby, has transformed into a nationwide adventure that has captivated the hearts of many.

The Journey Begins

Harvey’s journey kicked off in March 2022 with a goal to visit every pub in Nottinghamshire. However, as he delved deeper into the world of pubs, his aspirations expanded. What started as a local endeavor quickly evolved into a nationwide challenge, leading him to explore the diverse pub culture across England, Scotland, and Wales.

A Milestone Celebration in Edinburgh

On a recent Monday, Harvey reached a significant milestone: his 10,000th pub visit. He celebrated this achievement at Teuchters, a beloved establishment in the west end of Edinburgh, where he raised a pint of Pilot beer. Reflecting on this surreal moment, he expressed his disbelief at reaching such a remarkable number, stating, “When I started four years and three months ago, I never expected to reach 10,000 pubs.”

The Love for Scottish Pubs

During his visit to Teuchters, Harvey took a moment to appreciate the unique charm of Scottish pubs. He described the atmosphere as “amazing” and shared his admiration for Scotland’s pub culture, its people, and the picturesque towns. “Every time I come, I’m more and more impressed with the place,” he remarked, highlighting the warmth and hospitality he has encountered throughout his travels.

The Toll of the Journey

Despite his enthusiasm, Harvey candidly admitted that the journey has taken its toll. “I’m tired,” he confessed, revealing plans for a short holiday in Fuerteventura to recharge. However, his determination remains unwavering. “As soon as I get back, I’ll be straight back out on the road and doing it again,” he assured.

The Challenge Ahead

Harvey’s ambitious quest is far from over. With approximately 35,000 pubs scattered across the UK, he acknowledges that some of the establishments he visits may close down during his journey. Yet, his resolve to see the pub crawl through to the end is steadfast. “Absolutely, 100% determined,” he stated, fueled by a personal challenge from his wife, who doubted his ability to complete the journey. “Any time my wife tells me I’ll never do something, that makes me 10 times more determined to go through with it.”

Advocating for Pubs

Beyond the adventure, Harvey is also using his platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by licensed businesses. He has been vocal about the “ever-rising costs” that threaten the survival of many pubs. His journey is not just about visiting establishments; it’s about highlighting the issues that affect the pub industry and advocating for its preservation.

Looking Forward

As he lifted his pint in celebration, Harvey proclaimed, “Here’s to the next 10,000.” His passion for pubs and the stories they hold continues to drive him forward. With every pint poured and every conversation shared, he remains committed to exploring the rich tapestry of British pub culture, ensuring that the voices of these cherished establishments are heard.

In a world where the pub landscape is constantly changing, Dale Harvey’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of community, culture, and the simple joy of sharing a drink with friends.
