Enhanced Public Transportation in Fuerteventura: New Initiatives and Developments
Fuerteventura, one of the beautiful Canary Islands, is set to experience a transformation in its public transportation system. The Cabildo de Fuerteventura is initiating a new public bus transport plan that introduces 173 new weekly frequencies and adds over 10,000 kilometers of service. This initiative aims to significantly improve connectivity between the island’s main population centers, making daily commuting more efficient for residents and visitors alike.
Strengthening Popular Routes
An essential objective of this new transportation plan is to enhance some of the island’s most frequented bus lines. Notably, the Line 3, which runs between Puerto del Rosario and Las Salinas, will see considerable improvements. Frequencies will boost by nearly 62%, especially during weekends—with a 48.5% increase on Saturdays and a 27.7% increase on Sundays. This change promises to offer greater flexibility for those relying on public transport for recreational purposes.
Moreover, the introduction of a new Line 3 Exprés, serviced by electric buses, aims to cut travel times between Puerto del Rosario, the airport, and Caleta de Fuste. This eco-friendly option stands to better serve travelers and residents, contributing positively to the island’s sustainability goals.
Expanding Connections for Daily Commuters
The Line 16, which connects Gran Tarajal and Puerto del Rosario via Antigua, will also be reinforced. Weekly frequencies will rise from 127 to 183, marking an impressive 45% increase. Saturday services will expand dramatically, more than doubling from 13 to 27, addressing the needs of residents and alleviating congestion at popular stops like Gran Tarajal.
On top of that, the Line 5 connecting Morro Jable and Costa Calma will see a tremendous increase in service—up 62% to reach 220 trips per week, with Sundays alone experiencing a 75% increase. The new timetable will be designed to align with key commuting periods, particularly benefiting those in the tourism sector.
Aiming for Greater Accessibility
In line with its commitment to accessibility, the transportation upgrade includes the addition of 18 new bus drivers, bolstering the operational capacity of the island’s public transport network. Efficient staffing is crucial for maintaining increased service frequencies and ensuring that schedules run smoothly.
Also noteworthy is the enhancement of the Line 12, which connects Las Playitas to Gran Tarajal, with the introduction of two additional services at 15:45 and 16:00 hours. This improvement is tailored to meet the commuting needs of students and workers who rely on this route, providing them with more options during peak hours.
