In a significant move for Fuerteventura’s infrastructure, Natalia Évora, deputy of the Nationalist Canarian Group, made a compelling case in the Parliament of the Canary Islands for the expansion of the Puerto del Rosario Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR). She described this development as a “fundamental” project for both present and future sustainability in the region.
During her address at the Territorial Policy Commission, Évora emphasized the importance of understanding the project’s roadmap following the Government of the Canary Islands’ approval of its funding.
A Significant Investment of €15 Million
Highlighting the approval of multi-year expenditures, Évora confirmed that the project would involve a substantial investment exceeding €15 million. This funding will allow for the procurement of contracts related to the expansion works.
The expansion project aims to enhance the treatment capacity of the plant, improve sludge dehydration systems, and boost the regeneration and reuse of treated waters—a crucial step towards sustainability.
Enhancing Water Management
Évora underscored the importance of advancing the comprehensive water cycle, a key component of the Hydrological Plans. The objective is to improve the condition of groundwater, enhance the usage of regenerated water, and develop new resources to support agriculture.
Additionally, these advancements are expected to significantly reduce the volume of treated water currently discharged into the sea, addressing environmental concerns in the process.
Addressing Population Growth on the Island
As the population of Fuerteventura continues to grow, Évora pointed out the urgent need to reinforce such infrastructures. The increasing demand for water resources necessitates planning for new investments to ensure an adequate supply and more efficient management of this strategic resource.
Collaboration Among Administrations
Évora praised the collaborative efforts between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, noting that this unified approach has been pivotal in pushing the much-awaited project forward.
In her view, this institutional collaboration has not only expedited the project but has also laid the groundwork for transforming it into a tangible reality, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents on the island.
