Celebrating Heritage: The New Iberia Spanish Festival
IBERIA PARISH — The vibrant New Iberia Spanish Festival is set to kick off a week of family fun, beginning with a heartfelt Mass of Thanksgiving on Wednesday, April 15, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. This annual event not only celebrates Spanish culture but also serves as a testament to the rich history of New Iberia, Louisiana.
A Personal Connection to Culture
Kennadi Thibodeaux, who proudly holds the title of Queen X for this year’s festival, shares a deep-rooted connection to Spanish culture. “Spanish culture has been a big part of my life since I was a young girl,” she explains. For Thibodeaux, the festival is more than just an event; it’s a cherished opportunity to celebrate her heritage.
“My grandfather actually worked for the king of Spain when I was younger, so growing up, everything about Spanish culture was so amazing to me,” she recalls. The festival has become a platform for her to explore and express her love for this vibrant culture, and she encourages everyone to experience its uniqueness.
A Historical Perspective
The New Iberia Spanish Festival was established in 2012 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to representing the founding of New Iberia. Thibodeaux elaborates, “New Iberia was founded by seven Spanish families in 1779 who traveled here from Malaga, Spain.” This historical backdrop adds depth to the festival, making it a celebration of not just culture but also community and heritage.
Exciting Events Await
This year’s festival promises a lineup of familiar favorites, along with some exciting new additions. One of the standout events is the inaugural mom-calling contest. This fun competition invites children to showcase their creativity in calling their mothers, with three age divisions: 5 and under, 6 to 11, and 12 to 17. Each participant will receive a meal voucher for Mama’s Fried Chicken, and winners in each division will take home a $50 prize.
Thibodeaux emphasizes the family-oriented nature of the festival, stating, “Our festival is very family-oriented, and that represents everything I am.” This focus on family makes the event a perfect outing for attendees of all ages.
