Celebrating Health and Community: The First Insular Meeting of the Healthy Women’s Classroom in Fuerteventura
The vibrant island of Fuerteventura recently hosted its first insular meeting of the Healthy Women’s Classroom, a significant initiative spearheaded by the Fuerteventura Health Promotion Network (RedSAP). The event, held at the artful Centro de Arte Juan Ismael in Puerto del Rosario, brought together over a hundred women, health professionals, and collaborating entities from across the island. This gathering served not only as a celebration of health and wellness but also as an opportunity for participants to engage in a supportive community atmosphere.
Opening Remarks by Local Leaders
The event opened with insightful remarks from key figures in the island’s healthcare and governance sectors. Tomás Pérez, the Director of the Fuerteventura Health Area, Lola García, the President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and Samuel Jesús Sánchez, the Director of Nursing in Primary Care, all emphasized the importance of health education and community engagement. Their presence underlined the collaborative spirit of the initiative and the ongoing commitment to women’s health and wellness on the island.
A Community Initiative with Tangible Impact
The Healthy Women’s Classroom project was launched in 2022 by the RedSAP with a goal of fostering health awareness and empowerment among women in various primary care settings throughout Fuerteventura. Since its inception, this program has positively impacted over a thousand women, facilitating sessions focused on shared learning and mutual support. The initiative’s effectiveness and innovation were recognized in 2025 when it received the first INNOVA award for Women’s Health in the category of Implemented Projects from the Spanish Society of General and Family Doctors (SEMG).
A Platform for Connection and Support
What made this meeting particularly special was the opportunity to bring together participants from various local health centers and social agents involved in the initiative. This gathering allowed for a synthesis of different experiences and ideas, enhancing the network of collaboration that has been cultivated through regular sessions held in different Basic Health Zones. These sessions have been vital for fostering relationships and creating a supportive community environment centered on health education.
Engaging and Empowering Activities
The day’s programming was rich with informative and interactive activities designed to engage participants fully. One of the highlights was a presentation by Carolina Simón Valencia, the Coordinator of Psychology in Primary Care. Her insights into mental health and well-being resonated deeply with attendees, providing valuable knowledge that participants could apply in their everyday lives.
Additionally, attendees participated in a practical relaxation workshop led by midwife Mar Miranda. This session taught techniques for stress relief and self-care, highlighting the importance of mental and emotional wellness as part of overall health. The day culminated in an award ceremony, honoring the contributions of professionals, users, and collaborating spaces. This recognition served to reinforce the collaborative ethos that underpins the Healthy Women’s Classroom initiative.
Community Connection Through Shared Experiences
The event closed with a heartwarming gathering where participants shared their experiences and established connections with one another. A video montage showcasing highlights from previous sessions of the Healthy Women’s Classroom throughout the island was screened, further cementing the sense of community formed around this initiative. These shared moments and stories contributed to a strong sense of belonging and mutual support, which are essential elements of health and wellness.
In essence, the first insular meeting of the Healthy Women’s Classroom in Fuerteventura stands as a testament to the power of community-driven health initiatives. Through education, collaboration, and shared experiences, women on the island are not only learning about self-care but are actively fostering a supportive network aimed at promoting health and wellness for all.
