Strengthening Postal Services in Fuerteventura
This week, Paloma Hernández, the Socialist senator representing Fuerteventura, convened a crucial meeting with the local leaders of Correos alongside María Jesús de la Cruz, the island’s director for the General State Administration. Their discussion centered on the current state of public postal services, aiming to bolster and modernize the network of offices and delivery operations in Fuerteventura.
The Importance of Correos
Hernández emphasized the essential role that Correos plays across the island. More than just a postal service, Correos acts as a public entity that connects citizens with essential postal, financial, administrative, and digital services. It serves as a “one-stop shop” for administrative needs, representing the interests of the general public and ensuring that these services reach everyone, regardless of their location.
Commitment to Equal Access
The senator reiterated the commitment of the Socialist Party in Fuerteventura to ensure that all residents have equal access to public services. In islands with smaller municipalities and rural areas like Fuerteventura, it is vital that each office serves as an open door to equal opportunities. “It’s crucial that every resident has access to services without having to travel far,” she asserted.
Current Network of Services
At present, Correos operates seven technical offices located in key areas including Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo, Morro Jable, Costa Calma, Gran Tarajal, Antigua, and Castillo. Additionally, there are two auxiliary offices staffed by delivery personnel, ensuring that even the smallest communities receive reliable postal services.
Recent Developments
Among the recent improvements, the relocation of the offices in Costa Calma and Castillo stands out. These moves aim to enhance service quality and customer care. A significant agreement has also been reached with the municipality of Betancuria to open a new auxiliary office. This step is part of a national plan aimed at enhancing postal infrastructure in municipalities with fewer than 1,000 residents.
Historic Milestones
Hernández proudly noted that with this new agreement, Fuerteventura is set to achieve a historical milestone: having Correos offices in all municipalities on the island. This development allows residents to access the nearest post office without needing to travel to another municipality, significantly improving convenience and accessibility.
Stability and Growth of Employment
The senator highlighted the stability of the workforce in the island’s postal offices, which has remained steady since 2023 with a fully fixed staff. This stability not only enhances job security but also ensures consistent customer service. Moreover, there has been an 18% increase in stable employment within the distribution area. This growth is complemented by extended afternoon delivery shifts across all municipalities and additional recruitment for peak seasons, such as Christmas.
Government’s Commitment
Hernández wrapped up the meeting by reinforcing that the government’s dedication to Fuerteventura translates into tangible actions, investments, and improvements in services that ultimately enhance the well-being and equality of its residents. This commitment is not just theoretical; it manifests in the ongoing enhancements to public services that directly impact the daily lives of people living across the island.
