As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, its ongoing housing crisis is raising concerns about public health services and their accessibility.
Noemí Santana, a deputy from Podemos Canarias, addressed these pressing issues during a recent visit to Puerto del Rosario. She detailed how the island’s serious housing crisis is impeding the operational efficiency of public health services, making it challenging for healthcare professionals to relocate to the area.
In her agenda, Santana engaged with local social and community organizations, including a meeting with the feminist association Arena y Laurisilva. Their discussions centered on the social challenges faced by women, housing access, and the working conditions affecting many families on the island.
Critiquing the existing tourism model, Santana highlighted the detrimental effects of soaring rental prices and the expansion of vacation rentals on essential public sectors. She remarked, “In Fuerteventura, it is easier to find a hotel than a doctor,” noting that many health specialists hesitate to move to the island due to housing difficulties and exorbitant rent prices.
Furthermore, Santana called for the establishment of a public hospital in southern Fuerteventura to alleviate the burden on patients who currently must travel considerable distances to access medical services. Many residents find themselves enduring long journeys for consultations, diagnostic tests, or emergency care.
The day’s events culminated in her participation at a Podemos Fuerteventura Citizen Assembly. Here, pressing topics such as housing, healthcare, the water crisis, and rising living costs were discussed.
Podemos Canarias advocates for necessary interventions in the housing market, emphasizing the need to expand public housing stock, curb speculation, and strengthen public services to enhance the quality of life for residents.
