New Maritime Infrastructure: The Construction of Floating Caissons for Puerto del Rosario

The Port Authority of Las Palmas has embarked on an ambitious maritime project: the construction of eight large floating caissons intended for the new commercial pier at the Port of Puerto del Rosario, located in Fuerteventura. This initiative promises to enhance the port’s protective capabilities against northern swells, thereby increasing overall operational efficiency. The project also aims to provide a designated docking area for the unloading of petroleum products, ultimately freeing up the current commercial pier for other purposes.

Project Overview: Floating Caissons

The focal point of this initiative is the production of eight floating caissons, which are essential components for the new pier. This week marks a significant milestone, as the first of these caissons, named “Virgen de la Peña,” is scheduled for launching and docking in Las Palmas. Once lashed to the port, it will soon be transported to Puerto del Rosario for final placement.

Dimensions and Specifications

The “Virgen de la Peña” caisson measures 36.05 meters in length, 19.55 meters in width, and has a height of 15.90 meters. This smaller size is strategic; it is specifically designed to accommodate the future ro-ro ramp of the new pier. After the successful completion of this first unit, the construction team will shift their focus to the remaining seven caissons, which will eventually complete the new structure.

Continuous Construction Effort

Construction remains a relentless endeavor, with work being carried out around the clock. Each caisson is a rectangular block made of reinforced concrete, optimally designed with rectangular cells inside to reduce weight. A continuous footing at the base enhances their stability and ensures durability against harsh maritime conditions.

Structure of the New Dique

The new pier, referred to as the “dique,” will consist of two separate sections and an additional “tacón.” The first section will comprise two caissons, extending a total of 105.30 meters. The second section will be notably larger, made up of five caissons totaling 269.90 meters in length. The added “tacón,” which connects to the second segment, will measure 36.25 meters, further enhancing the pier’s structural integrity.

Financial Investment and Funding

The development of this new maritime infrastructure comes with a significant financial commitment, with the total project budget surpassing €40.6 million. Notably, this initiative benefits from funding through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), highlighting the project’s importance not only on a local scale but also within the broader European context.


This new infrastructure is set to revolutionize the operational capabilities of Puerto del Rosario, emphasizing strategic planning and investment in maritime facilities. As the project unfolds, it will be interesting to see how these advancements contribute to the economic dynamics of the region, especially concerning shipping and oil logistics.
