The excitement is palpable as Puerto del Rosario gears up for its much-anticipated Fiestas in Honor of Our Lady of the Rosary 2025, the beloved patron saint of the capital of Fuerteventura. This past Monday, the official program was unveiled in a vibrant ceremony at the Town Hall’s Plenary Hall, marking the start of celebrations that promise something for everyone.
The event was graced by the presence of local dignitaries, including Mayor David de Vera, Festivities Councilor Tacoremi Gutiérrez, and Janey Castañeyra of the Recreational Sports Group MERACAS, who will be heralding this year’s festivities.
Mayor David de Vera expressed the importance of the celebrations, stating, “These festivities are much more than just a schedule of events; they embody tradition, emotion, and participation. Year after year, local sports clubs, associations, and community groups come together to ensure that Puerto del Rosario celebrates its patron saint in a manner befitting its residents.” He highlighted efforts in recent years to revive beloved events, such as the Silvestre de León Memorial high-seas fishing competition and the iconic 24-Hour Basketball Tournament, emphasizing the municipality’s commitment to making these festivities inclusive and reflective of community sentiments.
Councilor Tacoremi Gutiérrez elaborated on this year’s collaborative efforts to curate an engaging program, stating, “We kick off on September 21 with a message from the MERACAS group, whose history is deeply intertwined with our own and symbolizes unity and togetherness. This year’s lineup includes the Ramón Castañeyra Memorial, offerings to Our Lady of the Rosary, and contemporary highlights like a concert by Macaco, the Young Night festivities, and the ‘Puerto tiene talento’ talent show. We’re excited to introduce fun activities for children, including special-price amusement rides, a solidarity stroll, and the comedy show ‘Risas en Puerto’ with Omayra Cazorla and Daniel Calero.”
In her remarks, Janey Castañeyra from MERACAS shared the group’s vision for the pregón (opening speech). She stressed the importance of blending themes of sports, memory, and coexistence. “We aim to create an opening that evokes feelings of joy and nostalgia while also making a statement. We encourage everyone to come and join the 24-Hour Basketball event, which has seen four generations participate, along with a new one now joining in. The festivities will close with an exciting performance from our local band, Chocolate Sexy.”
The festivities will run from September 21 to October 11, featuring a rich array of activities. From sports tournaments and lively concerts to festive dances and fun-filled family events—including immersive cinema experiences and the much-loved foam party—there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy.
This year’s celebrations blend traditional customs with innovative approaches, ensuring that all community members can feel included. The program also receives support from the DiverSex Patrol of Altihay LGTBI+ Fuerteventura, the Arena and Laurisilva Women’s Association Federation, and various security forces, ensuring a festive environment that prioritizes safety and inclusion.
The pinnacle of the festivities will occur on Tuesday, October 7, with a majestic Eucharist and a procession through the heart of Puerto del Rosario in honor of their patron saint.
