Inauguration of a Groundbreaking Exhibition: Retratar para Resistir
On Wednesday, the Casa de la Cultura in Puerto del Rosario unveiled the exhibition entitled Retratar para resistir. Fotografía participativa con enfoque de género e interculturalidad. This innovative artistic and social initiative will be open to the public until June 26 and showcases creative works born from workshops conducted across Puerto del Rosario, Santa Brígida, and Arrecife during October and November of 2025.
The Essence of Participatory Photography
This initiative, spearheaded by the Instituto Canario de Desarrollo Cultural in collaboration with various public administrations, transforms photography into a dynamic tool for expression, reflection, and social change. By documenting their perspectives, participants are encouraged to engage with pressing issues surrounding visual representation—focusing on gender, bodies, identity, and diversity. The exhibition’s inclusive and intersectional viewpoint aims to offer a multifaceted look at themes that resonate deeply within the community.
Personal Narratives Through Visual Art
Theheart of the exhibition lies in the works created by the workshop participants. Each piece is a visual narrative shaped by personal experiences, emotions, and stories. Every photograph emerges from a concept chosen by its creator, aiming to convey a unique message that not only reflects individual insights but also invites collective dialogue and reflection. This artistic expression serves as a mirror to society, encouraging viewers to confront and discuss varying realities.
Community Support and Engagement
The Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, emphasized the cultural significance of the exhibition, stating, “This exhibition demonstrates how culture can become a space for meeting, participation, and critical thought. We at the City Council continue to support initiatives that bring art closer to citizens and allow diverse realities to be visible through approachable and human-centered proposals.” His remarks underscore the commitment of local leadership to fostering an inclusive cultural environment.
Building Social Consciousness
Cultural Counselor Juan Manuel Verdugo highlighted the profound impact of participatory photography on social consciousness. He remarked, “This form of photography possesses enormous potential to generate social awareness and stimulate necessary conversations. This exhibition captures very personal and brave perspectives that resonate directly with the audience and enrich our municipality’s cultural programming.” Verdugo’s insights reveal a deep appreciation for art as a catalyst for important societal discussions.
Visiting the Exhibition
Art enthusiasts and members of the community are welcome to visit the exhibition at the Casa de la Cultura, located at Calle Ramiro de Maeztu, 2. The venue maintains standard opening hours, and the best part is that admission is entirely free. This accessibility reflects the initiative’s underlying mission: to engage and inspire the community through the power of art.
In summary, Retratar para resistir serves not only as an art exhibition but also as a powerful commentary on the intersections of gender, culture, and identity. The collaborative essence of this project fosters understanding, reflection, and conversation, making it a vital part of Puerto del Rosario’s cultural landscape.
