Rejection of La Herradura as an Energy Alternative
The debate surrounding energy infrastructure has expanded to include other areas within the Puerto del Rosario municipality, particularly La Herradura. This area has been under scrutiny as it currently accommodates energy generation facilities and has seen several business proposals arise through the competitive bidding process. However, according to the municipal authorities, the analysis of the ongoing state procedure and energy emergency declarations reinforces their position. They have outright rejected La Herradura as a viable alternative for energy infrastructure development.
The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, has been vocal about the municipality’s clear criteria regarding energy projects. He stated emphatically, “The direction of this municipality has been consistent from the outset: the relocation of the El Charco thermal power plant must occur at Zurita, as stipulated by the municipal planning and institutional agreements reached.” This statement further solidifies the municipal objective of concentrating all energy infrastructures in a strategically planned location, avoiding the spread of facilities across less suitable areas.
Search for Coordinated Solutions
Recognizing the critical nature of this issue, a meeting is scheduled for May 18, at the request of the Puerto del Rosario City Council. This significant gathering will involve Mayor David de Vera and the Minister of Ecological Transition for the Government of the Canary Islands. The primary goal of this meeting is to strengthen institutional dialogue and collaboratively explore solutions that respect the municipal territorial planning.
The municipality emphasizes that the General Plan for Puerto del Rosario designates the Zurita area as the ideal space for energy infrastructure concentration. This decision is backed by technical and territorial criteria aimed at minimizing the ecological impact on other parts of the municipality. By concentrating industrial facilities in designated areas, the city aims to preserve the surrounding environmental quality and enhance the efficiency of energy management.
