The Ayuntamiento de Puerto del Rosario, through its Department of Culture, is taking significant strides toward revitalizing one of the municipality’s most iconic heritage elements: the historic La Charca water depot. On April 23, local Culture Councillor Juan Manuel Verdugo visited the site alongside project architect Nuria Vallespín, marking a day dedicated to the transformation of this historical location into a vibrant cultural center for the community.
Historical Significance
Constructed during the Republican era, the La Charca depot is an architectural marvel made from basalt, encompassing an impressive 2,000 square meters. This extensive structure features two independent water reservoirs, sturdy walls of 1.5 meters thick, and 56 robust pillars. The depot is not just an architectural feat but also a symbol of a crucial period in Fuerteventura’s history. Access to water significantly influenced the island’s development, shaping the lives and livelihoods of its inhabitants.
Vision for Cultural Space
Mayor David de Vera sees the project as an excellent opportunity to enhance public spaces. “Once rehabilitated, this infrastructure will host diverse activities and serve as a social and cultural gathering spot,” he remarked. With various events organized by the municipality and local associations, the aim is to create a hub that fosters interaction and community spirit.

Councillor Juan Manuel Verdugo emphasized the importance of revitalizing this impressive yet underutilized structure. “This project represents a commitment to both culture and heritage, reflecting how Fuerteventura has historically battled water scarcity,” he explained. The ambition is to turn this space into a multifunctional cultural center, showcasing exhibitions, film screenings, and activities that reconnect citizens with their rich historical background.

Architect Nuria Vallespín highlighted the unique characteristics of La Charca. She described it as “a spectacular place, impressive in its architectural emptiness,” which will allow Puerto del Rosario and the entire island to develop an exhibition center focused on the history of water collection and distribution from the 1930s. The project also opens up opportunities for community engagement, encouraging public discussion about the cultural uses envisioned for this future water museum.
Detailed Planning Ahead
The project involves drafting a basic execution plan, along with electrical, sanitation, climate control, lighting, and waterproofing systems compliant with the Technical Building Code. With an initial budget of 12,840 euros funded by municipal resources, the plan is to pursue future European investments to implement the rehabilitation works. The Department of Culture is determined to position this facility as a cultural landmark in the capital, while also honoring the significance of industrial architecture as an integral part of the municipality’s legacy.
