Puerto del Rosario Announces Carnival 2026: A Musical Extravaganza
Puerto del Rosario has officially unveiled its vibrant program for Carnival 2026, set to spark joy from February 6th to 22nd. This year’s theme, “The World of Musicals,” promises to infuse the festivities with a dynamic and exciting flair. The celebration remains deeply rooted in the community’s identity while encouraging participation from all corners of the municipality.
A Festive Canvas of Activities
The presentation showcased an extensive and varied schedule of events, including some of the most anticipated highlights like the Carrera de Arretrankos, Regata de Achipencos, and the Gran Cabalgata. Carnival enthusiasts can also look forward to the Carnaval de Día, numerous galas, murga gatherings, and activities designed for every age group. This blend of iconic traditions and fresh experiences will surely create an unforgettable atmosphere throughout the duration of the celebrations.
Community-Centric Celebration
The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, emphasized the participatory spirit of this year’s Carnival. He stated, “This Carnival is once again a festival created by everyone, lived on the streets, reflecting the engaging character of our municipality.” He highlighted the significance of events like the Arretrankos, Achipencos, and the Cabalgata, noting that they are not merely programs but cherished moments where community members actively engage, share, and claim ownership of the Carnival experience.
De Vera also underlined the revival of traditional events such as the Gala de la Reina, Gala Infantil, and the Gran Dama, which have become central to the festive landscape of Puerto del Rosario. His appreciation extended to those behind the scenes—the municipal staff, carnival groups, and security services—whose efforts ensure that the festivities are not only vibrant but also safe and well-organized.
A Cultural Treasure for the Youth
Adargoma Hernández, the youth advisor for the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, lauded the hard work of the carnival groups and staff, declaring that the Carnival is not merely an expense but a vital opportunity for youth and cultural engagement on the island. This perspective reinforces the notion that Carnival is a cultural treasure that breathes life into the community and uplifts its social fabric.
Community Input and Infrastructure Improvements
Tacoremi Gutiérrez, the councilor for Celebrations, expressed her satisfaction with the newly unveiled program, crediting the Council of Carnival for its collaborative efforts. She mentioned how they meticulously crafted the events based on community feedback while staying true to the essence of Puerto del Rosario’s Carnival. This year’s festivities are bolstered by improved infrastructure, including a new municipal tent and seamless coordination with various institutions, enhancing the overall Carnival experience.
Gutiérrez also highlighted the Patronato de Turismo’s collaboration for the Achipencos, an event that projects the municipality’s image and has become one of the carnival’s major attractions. She aptly pointed out that the Carnival thrives on active community participation.
A Cultural Dance Legacy
The launch event offered an opportunity to recognize the roles of the Carnival 2026 promoters, the Asociación Canaria de Escuelas de Danza de Fuerteventura (ACED). Their secretary, Laura García, expressed gratitude toward the municipal government for trusting them to open the Carnival. “Dance represents color, joy, and Carnival,” she stated, emphasizing that true magic happens when people come together to dance, transforming the streets into a grand stage.
Key Dates and Highlights
The Carnival kicks off on February 6th, with the traditional “birth of the sardine” and a speech by ACED, alongside the presentation of candidates for the adult, child, and grand dame titles. Following this, on February 7th, the exhilarating Carrera de Arretrankos takes place, showcasing one of the most eccentric and participatory carnival events.
Activities will span the entire week, reaching neighborhoods and towns within the municipality, featuring children’s events, workshops, and joyful performances. The weekend of February 13th and 14th promises an extravaganza of festivities with the Encuentro Insular de Murgas Infantiles, a concert by Joseph Fonseca, and the Concurso Insular de Murgas.
The second week will be marked by a series of galas, with the Gala Adulta on February 16th, Gala Infantil on February 17th, and the Gala de la Gran Dama on February 18th.
