La Casa de la Cultura Welcomes “El Verano de los Inocentes”
On Tuesday, June 9, at 19:30, La Casa de la Cultura in Puerto del Rosario is set to host the presentation of “El Verano de los Inocentes,” the latest work by journalist Roger Mateos from the EFE Agency. This event is part of the Acontracultura Festival, organized by the Culture Department of the local government. In this presentation, Mateos delves into his investigation surrounding the last person executed during Franco’s regime.
Renowned author Javier Tendero will also be on hand to present a book detailing the life of Xosé Humberto Baena, a militant from FRAP who holds the grim distinction of being the final person executed under Franco, accused of murdering a police officer.
Uncovering Hidden Narratives
Mateos’s investigation sheds light on the socio-political context of the time through dozens of testimonies. He has gathered insights from former FRAP militants, relatives of those sentenced to death, and various legal advocates, offering an extensive look into a turbulent period of Spanish history.
In addition, the work incorporates previously unreleased documents, including transcripts from clandestine meetings of the PCE (m-l) held in 1975 and archival materials from the Central State Archive of Albania related to FRAP’s activities, deepening the narrative with firsthand accounts and historical records.
The Journey of Roger Mateos
Roger Mateos, born in Barcelona in 1977, has been a stalwart at the EFE Agency since 2003, currently serving as head of the Political section in Barcelona. His career spans a plethora of issues, with a keen focus on historical and socio-political narratives.
His previous works include “El país del presidente eterno,” “Soldados del gol,” and “Corea del Norte, utopía de hormigón,” among others. “Caso Cipriano Martos” stands out as a significant investigation that contributed markedly to the remembrance of antifranco militants.
The upcoming presentation promises an engaging exploration into one of the most critical incidents surrounding the dwindling days of Franco’s dictatorship. By presenting the last execution under this regime, Mateos offers an opportunity to assess Spain’s complex historical landscape.
