As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, significant infrastructure developments are underway to enhance connectivity on the island.
The Government of the Canary Islands has provisionally awarded a major contract for the construction of the Airport to Cruce de Pozo Negro section of the North-South highway in Fuerteventura, with a project cost of €193,682,934.86, including local taxes. The contract has been awarded to a consortium consisting of Sacyr Construction, Cavosa Obras y Proyectos, AMC Construcciones y Contratas 2014, and Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones.
This provisional award marks a significant step forward in executing one of the essential infrastructures outlined in the Canary Islands-State Highway Agreement. Following technical approval in September 2025, the contracting process began in December after navigating complex technical and environmental assessments.
To minimize environmental impact, the project incorporates innovative construction solutions, including the island’s first two-tube tunnel designed to protect sensitive habitats and support species conservation, specifically the Canarian houbara. Once completed, this highway will enhance road safety, reduce travel times, and improve connectivity between key residential, tourist, and economic areas, providing a vital boost to the local economy through increased activity and job creation.
Project Details
The Airport to Cruce de Pozo Negro section is part of the larger Puerto del Rosario-Morro Jable highway initiative and includes important new links to highways FV-2, FV-413, and FV-50. This development will optimize access to Fuerteventura’s airport and critical zones such as Caleta de Fuste and various urban and rural centers in Antigua municipality.
Key features of the project include:
- A 1.2-kilometer tunnel, complemented by false tunnels at both ends.
- A 190-meter viaduct crossing the La Torre ravine.
- Various infrastructure enhancements such as overpasses, underpasses, and additional structures to maintain existing road access.
Additionally, the project is committed to energy sustainability, featuring photovoltaic systems that will provide the necessary electrical power for the tunnel and links, enabling the infrastructure to operate energy self-sufficiently. These initiatives align with the Canary Islands’ emissions reduction and decarbonization goals.
Caldereta to Puerto del Rosario Update
In tandem with this development, authorities have announced progress on the Caldereta to Puerto del Rosario section, currently under construction. Recent reports indicate that work has advanced significantly, with numerous resources deployed to ensure timely completion. An opening of a five-kilometer stretch is anticipated this summer, marking a substantial achievement within the overall highway project.
The development of these highways not only aims to improve accessibility across Fuerteventura but also promises to stimulate investment and foster economic growth, making the island an increasingly attractive destination for investors and residents alike.
