Sacyr Secures Contract for Airport-Pozo Negro Highway Project

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, the region is witnessing significant infrastructure developments.

A recent tender for the construction of a section of the Airport-Pozo Negro highway has been awarded to the company Sacyr, which presented a proposal totaling €193.7 million, significantly under the projected budget of €215.9 million. This marks the largest road project in Fuerteventura’s history and is expected to commence sometime in 2026.

Sacyr’s winning bid is the result of a partnership that includes Cavosa Obras y Proyectos, AMC Construcciones y Contratas 2014, and Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones. Other bidders included prominent firms like Acciona Construction, Comsa, and Dragados, highlighting the competitive nature of the tender.

The project outlines the construction of four key links:

  1. Airport Link: Connecting to the FV-2, this will serve as the main access route to the island’s airport.
  2. El Castillo Link: This will provide access to tourist and urban hubs including Caleta de Fuste, Triquivijate, and Antigua.
  3. Las Salinas Link: Maintaining connections with the FV-2, it focuses on the southern parts of Caleta de Fuste.
  4. Pozo Negro Roundabout: This will facilitate interactions with the FV-50 towards Agua de Bueyes and Antigua.

A notable aspect of the project is the planned 1.2-kilometer tunnel, designed to enhance traffic flow between kilometer markers 9+230 and 10+430. Additionally, a 190-meter viaduct will be constructed in the Torre ravine, along with significant infrastructure at both the Airport and El Castillo links. This includes an overpass in Las Salinas and three underpasses aimed at preserving local roadways and rural access.

Rosana Melián, the General Director of Road Infrastructure, highlighted that this project will be the first to integrate renewable energy sources. The initiative aims to achieve energy neutrality by utilizing photovoltaic panels to power the lighting systems at the new links and tunnel, thereby promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

As these developments unfold, Fuerteventura continues to position itself as an attractive destination for investment, signaling a robust future for both infrastructure and tourism in the region.
