The newly inaugurated Amazigh Space in Granada marks a significant cultural achievement as the first exhibition dedicated entirely to Amazigh culture in Europe. The Amazigh Space spans 162 square meters and features nearly 200 artifacts that showcase the artistic and cultural imprints left by the Amazigh on the history of Al-Andalus. The exhibition is divided into two thematic sections, focusing on both artistic and social aspects of Amazigh culture. It not only serves as a gallery but also as a research and outreach center, aiming to foster greater awareness and appreciation of Amazigh heritage.

The layout of the Amazigh Space is thoughtfully designed to engage visitors through a structured tour. The exhibition begins with an introductory area and unfolds across seven sections on two floors, incorporating audiovisual resources, historical maps, and interactive elements.

Visitors will explore the origins of the Amazigh peoples, their unique cultural identity, and the territories they have historically inhabited. One highlight is the exploration of the Tifinagh alphabet, which has seen a revival in contemporary times, alongside the revitalization of the Tamazight language.

Moreover, the exhibition delves into the crucial role that Amazigh communities played in the formation of Al-Andalus, emphasizing the shared political and cultural spaces that emerged between the Maghreb and the Iberian Peninsula. The tour culminates in a reflection on the enduring links between Granada and Amazigh traditions, showcasing living heritage through architecture, crafts, textiles, ceramics, music, and lifestyle practices.

Spanish-Moroccan Initiative

The establishment of the Amazigh Space is the result of a collaborative effort between the Alhambra Trust and the Dr. Leila Mezian Foundation, a Moroccan philanthropic organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Amazigh culture. This partnership underscores the importance of cross-cultural dialogue and cooperation in celebrating shared histories.

Notably, the initiative has been supported by Spanish diplomat Jorge Dezcallar and his wife, Teresa Eça, who contributed a remarkable collection of traditional Amazigh jewelry. This collection, along with textiles, ceramics, and everyday objects from North Africa, enriches the exhibition and provides tangible connections to the Amazigh way of life.

During the opening ceremony, Patricia del Pozo, the acting Regional Minister for Culture and Sport of the Andalusian Regional Government, emphasized the significance of this cultural center. She described it as a pioneering space for the research, dissemination, and promotion of the historical, artistic, and ethnological heritage of the Amazigh civilization, which has been fundamental to the construction of Al-Andalus.

The inauguration was attended by various dignitaries, including the Moroccan Ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, and other notable figures from both Spain and Morocco. Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit of this initiative and its potential to foster greater understanding and appreciation of Amazigh culture.
