A Revolutionary Leap in Solar Energy: Harnessing the Power of Railway Tracks
In a remarkable innovation, a Swiss company has successfully installed solar panels between active railway tracks, marking a significant breakthrough in renewable energy infrastructure. This pioneering project, located in Buttes, Switzerland, has already seen over 11,000 trains pass over the solar panels without any incidents, showcasing a new way to generate clean energy without encroaching on farmland or rooftops.
Solar Power Without Land Loss
The pilot installation spans a 100-meter stretch of railway in the Neuchâtel canton and features 48 photovoltaic panels, each rated at 380 watts, culminating in a total capacity of 18 kWp. This unique setup allows for the generation of electricity while preserving the primary function of the railway tracks. Instead of competing for space with agriculture, nature reserves, or urban rooftops, the Swiss startup Sun-Ways has ingeniously utilized existing railway corridors, creating a dual-purpose infrastructure.
Since its launch in April 2025, the system has delivered over 16,000 kWh to the local grid, despite a month-long pause due to snow and technical work. Sun-Ways estimates that if this technology were deployed across suitable sections of the Swiss rail network, it could potentially supply up to 1 billion kWh annually—enough energy to power tens of thousands of homes.
Engineering Resilience: Designed for the Rails
One of the standout features of this solar installation is its robust design, engineered to withstand the vibrations and airflow generated by trains traveling at speeds of up to 90 km/h. The French rail operator SNCF is closely monitoring the project, evaluating factors such as glare, panel placement, and maintenance needs. This collaboration ensures that the solar panels not only perform efficiently but also integrate seamlessly with existing rail operations.
The modular design of the solar panels is another key innovation. Each six-meter module, consisting of three panels, can be disconnected and removed from the grid in approximately 10 minutes. This feature is crucial for railway maintenance, which often requires direct access to the tracks for inspections or repairs. Specialized machinery developed by Scheuchzer, a railway engineering firm, facilitates both the installation and removal processes, making large-scale deployment more feasible.
Addressing Maintenance Challenges
Concerns about dirt and debris accumulation on the solar panels have also been effectively addressed. Initially, Sun-Ways considered implementing a brush-based cleaning system. However, they discovered that the airflow created by passing trains naturally keeps the panels clear of dust, significantly reducing the need for manual cleaning interventions. This innovative solution not only enhances efficiency but also minimizes maintenance costs.
Scaling Up: The Next Challenge
While the initial results are promising, the project faces a significant technical challenge: efficiently transporting the generated electricity over longer distances. Julien Pouget, an associate professor at the University of Applied Sciences of Valais, emphasizes that stretches longer than 500 meters require specialized electrical infrastructure to boost voltage and minimize energy losses. This aspect will be crucial as the project looks to expand its reach beyond the pilot installation.
Growing International Interest
The success of this pilot project has sparked international interest. SNCF plans to continue monitoring the Swiss installation until at least April 2028, while discussions are underway with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and potential partners in Asia. Sun-Ways is actively working to shorten the experimental phase and secure final regulatory approvals, paving the way for broader implementation.
As innovative uses of existing infrastructure gain traction across Europe, the Sun-Ways project exemplifies how reimagining everyday spaces can lead to significant advancements in renewable energy. This initiative not only highlights the potential of solar energy but also sets a precedent for future projects that prioritize sustainability without sacrificing valuable land resources.
In a world increasingly focused on clean energy solutions, the integration of solar panels into railway corridors could very well represent a new frontier in the quest for sustainable power generation.
