The vibrant city of Madrid is set to come alive once again with the magic of theatre, puppetry, circus, and more at the Teatralia International Performing Arts Festival. Running from March 6 to 29, 2026, this year marks the festival’s 30th edition, showcasing the best international and Spanish creations for audiences of all ages.
A Rich History of Artistic Collaboration
Over the past three decades, Teatralia has become a cornerstone of the performing arts scene, featuring nearly 400 foreign companies from all continents and more than 300 Spanish companies. With around 1,000 plays performed across various venues in Madrid and its surrounding municipalities, the festival has offered more than 6,000 performances. This impressive legacy highlights the festival’s commitment to fostering artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.
A Diverse and Eclectic Programme
This year, Teatralia will present 30 shows from 29 companies hailing from 11 countries, celebrating its milestone anniversary with a programme that is as diverse as it is engaging. The festival promises a rich tapestry of genres, including theatre, circus, dance, and music, all intertwined to create unique experiences. The productions will address pressing contemporary issues such as immigration, environmentalism, and historical memory, ensuring that the festival remains relevant and thought-provoking.
Venues and Performances Across Madrid
The festival will take place in 13 venues and 15 stages throughout Madrid, including notable locations such as the Paco Rabal Cultural Centre, La Casa Encendida, and Teatros del Canal. Additionally, performances will extend to 19 stages across 17 municipalities in the region, including Alcalá de Henares, Alcorcón, and Pozuelo de Alarcón. This extensive reach allows the festival to engage a broad audience, making the arts accessible to everyone.
Inaugural Performance: A Journey into Jules Verne’s Imagination
Teatralia will kick off on March 6 with the premiere of Verne, a captivating production inspired by the futuristic worlds envisioned by the legendary French writer Jules Verne. Produced by Onírica Mecánica, this show promises to transport audiences into a realm of imagination and wonder, setting the tone for the exciting performances to follow.
Literary Inspirations and Adaptations
Many of the festival’s productions draw from classic literature, offering innovative adaptations that breathe new life into beloved stories. For instance, Pato, Patito by Teatrocinema is a mesmerizing blend of music, theatre, animation, and film, reimagining Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling. Similarly, Racontars Arctiques adapts tales from Danish writer Jørn Riel, exploring the challenges faced by a group of hunters in extreme weather conditions.
Musical and Theatrical Fusion
Music plays a vital role in several productions, enhancing the emotional depth and engagement of the performances. Boléro by Cie DK59 invites audiences to experience the hypnotic rhythms of Maurice Ravel’s iconic melody through dance. Meanwhile, MIKRO by Cas Public showcases the compositions of a Hungarian maestro, and Swan Lake by choreographer Florence Caillon offers a fresh, acrobatic take on the world’s most famous ballet.
A Touch of Humor and Absurdity
For those seeking laughter, the festival features productions that embrace the absurd and the whimsical. Actapalabra by Théâtre Am Stram Gram delivers a delightful dose of clowning, while Ákri by Manel Rosés humorously explores the challenges of climbing a ladder. The comedic concert Ouverture by Teatergruppen Batida and Ay qué lío! by Eugenia Manzanera promise to keep audiences entertained with their clever storytelling and engaging performances.
