Heatwave Hits the Canary Islands This Friday

As summer continues to unfold, the Canary Islands are bracing for another day of soaring temperatures this Friday. The State Meteorological Agency has issued forecasts indicating that the southern and southeastern regions of Gran Canaria will be particularly affected, with temperatures potentially reaching a sweltering 34°C. Meanwhile, Fuerteventura is also expected to experience highs between 30°C and 32°C. As the sun sets, nighttime temperatures will remain elevated, hovering between 24°C and 28°C in the most impacted areas.

Weather Conditions

The weather across the archipelago is expected to be predominantly clear, although some low clouds may linger in the northern regions during the night. A light calima, or dust haze, is anticipated in the higher altitudes of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, which could slightly obscure visibility. This phenomenon is not uncommon in the Canary Islands, often resulting from winds carrying dust from the Sahara Desert.

In terms of temperature fluctuations, minimum temperatures are projected to rise slightly across much of the islands. However, maximum temperatures may see a decrease in northern and inland areas, while the southern and western slopes will continue to experience the heat.

Wind and Sea Conditions

Northeast winds are expected to be strong, particularly in the northwest and southeast regions of some islands. Gran Canaria may experience particularly intense gusts, with offshore winds reaching force 6 and even 7 in certain areas. This could lead to rough seas, making it essential for mariners and beachgoers to exercise caution.

Island Breakdown

Lanzarote

Lanzarote will enjoy generally clear skies, with some low clouds expected in the north and west during the night. The southeast of the island is forecasted to reach highs around 30°C, while Arrecife will see temperatures fluctuating between 22°C and 30°C.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura will experience slightly lower maximum temperatures, yet still expect highs of 30°C to 32°C, particularly in the southeast and inland areas. In Puerto del Rosario, temperatures are anticipated to range from 22°C to 29°C, providing a warm but manageable climate.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria will have a mixed bag of weather. The northern part of the island is likely to be cloudier, especially below 600-800 meters, while the southern regions will bask in mostly clear skies. The Tirajana basin and southeastern areas could see maximums reaching 34°C. Overnight lows in some regions may remain between 24°C and 26°C, with Las Palmas reporting temperatures from 23°C to 27°C.

Tenerife

In Tenerife, low clouds will blanket the northern regions, but the rest of the island will enjoy clear skies. Temperatures could soar to 30°C in the eastern and southern slopes, including the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Nighttime temperatures may not dip below 24°C to 26°C, making for warm evenings.

La Gomera

La Gomera is set to experience warm conditions, particularly in the southern and western regions, where highs are expected to reach around 30°C. San Sebastián will see temperatures ranging from 23°C to 33°C, providing a pleasant atmosphere for both locals and visitors.

La Palma

La Palma will have mostly clear skies, although some cloud cover is expected in the north and east. Maximum temperatures are anticipated to decrease slightly, with Santa Cruz de La Palma registering between 22°C and 27°C, offering a more temperate climate compared to its neighboring islands.

El Hierro

El Hierro may see highs reaching 30°C in the midlands and higher areas of the eastern and southern slopes. Valverde is expected to have temperatures ranging from 18°C to 26°C, making it one of the cooler spots in the archipelago.

For those planning to visit or reside in the Canary Islands this Friday, it’s essential to stay hydrated and take precautions against the heat. Whether you’re lounging on the beach or exploring the islands, the warm weather offers a perfect backdrop for enjoying the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture that the Canaries have to offer.
