New Family Care Unit Launches in Fuerteventura’s Health Area
The healthcare landscape on the idyllic island of Fuerteventura is undergoing a transformative enhancement with the recent launch of a new Family Care Unit (UAF) at the Antigua Health Center. This initiative, spearheaded by the Health Department of the Canary Islands government, marks an important evolution in the region’s healthcare services, reflecting a deep commitment to improving community health.

The introduction of the fourth Family Care Unit is designed to broaden and strengthen the healthcare offerings in the Antigua area. This health center, which spans an impressive 591 square meters, currently serves a total of 5,021 registered users. Of this total, 4,553 are adults, while 668 are children, showcasing the diverse population that relies on these essential health services.
Tomás Pérez, the director of the Health Area of Fuerteventura, emphasized the significance of this new unit, stating, “The incorporation of this fourth Family Care Unit represents an important step in improving the quality and accessibility of the services we offer to the towns of Antigua, Betancuria, El Valle de Santa Inés, and the Vega de Río de Palmas.” He further underscored the commitment to providing healthcare that is both close to the community and tailored to the specific needs of its residents.
Comprehensive Healthcare Team
The team at the Antigua Health Center is robust, comprising about twenty healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering effective primary care. Among them are four family doctors, four family and community nurses, a community link nurse, a pediatrician, a pediatric nurse, a midwife, a physiotherapist, a social worker, nursing assistants, administrative staff, and even a cleaning assistant. This diverse team is geared towards addressing a wide array of health issues, ensuring that residents receive holistic and well-rounded care.
A Multitude of Services
Since its establishment in late 2016, the Antigua Health Center has been committed to offering a comprehensive suite of health services. Notably, the center features distinct consultation areas for both medical and nursing professionals, allowing for specialized care that meets the needs of both adult and pediatric patients. The dedicated Pediatric Care Unit provides focused attention to children, addressing their unique health concerns effectively.
Additionally, the health center is equipped with various facilities, including a blood extraction room, a consultation area dedicated to smoking cessation, and a multipurpose room.
