Be Free Fuerteventura 2025: Celebrating Diversity and Community

This week marks the launch of the Be Free Fuerteventura 2025, a vibrant festival that stands as a symbol of diversity, culture, and the LGTBIQ+ community. Organized by ALTIHAY Fuerteventura in collaboration with the Cabildo insular, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, and Clapso Producciones, this festival aims to promote inclusivity and celebrate the rich tapestry of identities that fall under the LGTBIQ+ umbrella.

Kickoff: A Cinematic Journey Begins

Kicking off on Monday, June 23, the festival commenced with the inauguration of the XXIII LGTBIQ+ Film Showcase at the Auditorio Insular. This event, organized by ALTIHAY with support from Cinemateca Pedro Zerolo and funding from the Cabildo’s Department of Culture, set a tone of excitement for what’s to come. The showcase started with the emotional short film Tarek, directed by Anatael Pérez, followed by the screening of Triángulos Rosas, a film by Borja Lynch. Lynch himself engaged with the audience post-screening, sharing insights and the emotional journey his film encapsulates.

During the inauguration, representatives from ALTIHAY expressed gratitude to the Department of Culture for its support and acknowledged the role of the Cinemateca Pedro Zerolo, which has curated the event for four consecutive years. Rayco León, the Culture Councillor, emphasized the importance of ALTIHAY’s multifaceted activism, particularly through the medium of cinema.

Upcoming Screenings and Events

Continuing the film festivities, on Tuesday, June 24, audiences were treated to a selection of shorts including El Mueble de las Fotos and El Mundo Entero at 11:30 AM, followed by more evening screenings featuring La Duda, Sobremesa: Family Reunión, and the feature film Toll at 8:00 PM. The event on Wednesday, June 25, promises an exciting slate as well, with selected short films from the 2025 Short Film Competition to be screened at 8:00 PM, giving the audience a chance to vote on their favorites.

Celebratory Performances and Recognition

The festivities continue with the Pride Concert on Thursday, June 26, featuring talented artists Sofía Coll, Kuve, Gara Alemán, and Marta Umpiérrez at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos. This concert is expected to be a high-energy celebration of music and identity.

On Friday, June 27, the Altihay Awards 2025 will be presented, recognizing notable contributions to the LGTBIQ+ community. Following the awards, the dynamic spectacle Divas in Drags will certainly deliver an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

Noteworthy Community Engagement Activities

Among the highlights of the festival is the ‘Chapuzón por la Diversidad’ event on June 28 at the Club Deportivo Herbania, offering a fun and interactive way for people to engage with the festival’s themes. Additionally, the musical Los Tacones de Papá will take the stage, with tickets available through ecoentradas.com or the culturafuerteventura.es website, inviting audiences to enjoy an enchanting night filled with music and storytelling.

Grand Finale Events

As the festival nears its conclusion, a lively Fiesta Fuerte Petarda is scheduled for Saturday, June 29, starting at 10:00 PM at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos. On Sunday, the festival will wrap up with the March for Diversity and Memory and the Aquadrag Gala at Playa de los Pozos, culminating in a vibrant closure by the renowned DJ Petriclón.
