Cabildo Invests Nearly €300,000 to Upgrade Altavista Water Network in Tuineje

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, infrastructure improvements are underway to enhance community services.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, in collaboration with the Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium (CAAF), is set to invest nearly €300,000 in upgrading the water supply system in the Altavista neighborhood of Tuineje. This initiative comes as part of efforts to modernize aging infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the community.

Recent site visits by Cabildo President Lola García and CAAF CEO Adargoma Hernández, accompanied by Tuineje Mayor David Herrera, highlighted the urgent need for this upgrade. The current water supply network, having evolved alongside the expansion of the neighborhood, features various materials and diameters, which limits its efficacy in providing adequate service to all residents.

The decision to proceed with the “Renewal of the Altavista Network” was made after thorough assessments of the existing conditions and discussions with local residents and municipal officials to address community concerns.

Hernández indicated that the outdated network includes sections with varying diameters, some of which fall short of meeting current demand. The main pipeline consists of differing materials—such as polyethylene and PVC—with sections buried underground and others exposed, reflecting a history of multiple expansions over the years.

The planned improvements involve installing a new 90-millimeter main collector designed to transport water from the supply tank, supplemented by a 63-millimeter secondary network for home connections. Additionally, lead-free ball valves will be integrated into the system, facilitating better management of supply zones and minimizing user impact during any future disruptions.

Mayor David Herrera expressed gratitude to both the Cabildo and CAAF for addressing a longstanding request from Altavista residents. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between governmental entities in enhancing essential municipal services.

The construction is expected to take approximately six months, contributing to CAAF’s broader strategy to modernize Fuerteventura’s water infrastructure, minimize leakage, and improve service quality in response to the island’s demographic growth over recent years.

The Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium has requested residents’ understanding for any inconveniences during the construction period but assures that the forthcoming improvements will significantly benefit the neighborhood’s future water supply.
