Fuerteventura Embraces Artificial Intelligence: A New Era of Learning and Innovation
This week, the Cabildo de Fuerteventura launched its ambitious project ‘FuerteventurIA: Inteligencia Artificial para todos’, marking a significant step towards integrating artificial intelligence into various sectors of the Majorera society. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Information Technology and New Technologies, aims to introduce AI concepts beginning with public administration employees, setting a foundation for digital transformation across the island.
Developed in collaboration with the Canarias Excellence Technology Cluster (CET), the training initiative focuses on equipping public employees with AI tools designed to streamline administrative processes, enhance efficiency, and provide improved services to residents. The goal is not just technological advancement but also to educate public servants about the potential of these tools in their everyday work.
The project is financially supported by the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) along with additional resources from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. The training sessions are set to take place at the Insular Youth Center in Puerto del Rosario, where the first two courses will provide hands-on knowledge about practical applications of AI.
Carmen Alonso, the Minister of Information Technology and New Technologies, emphasizes that “artificial intelligence presents an opportunity to modernize public administration and improve the services we deliver to the citizens.” This initiative aims to empower public staff to understand the tools available and use them responsibly, securely, and in alignment with current regulations.
The first training session, titled ‘Automatización de procesos de la Administración Pública con IA’, is currently underway and is being facilitated by DataGrowth. This course covers essential topics such as the automation of workflow processes, smart document management, and the integration of tools like Gemini and NotebookLM. Participants will learn to optimize repetitive tasks, thereby significantly reducing management times, a crucial aspect in public service efficiency.
In the following week, the second course, ‘Uso responsable de la IA y protección de datos en la Administración’, will commence, led by Dataseg. This course takes a deeper dive into the applicable regulatory framework, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the new European AI Act. It will also address ethical data governance and the identification of risks linked to the usage of AI technologies in public administration.

The ‘FuerteventurIA’ project aims to democratize knowledge and tools related to artificial intelligence, targeting various sectors of insular society. It envisions a digital transformation that is accessible, ethical, and beneficial to all residents.
Following this initial phase centered around public administration, the program plans to expand over the coming months, introducing additional training sessions aimed at educators, businesses, and the general population of Fuerteventura. This progressive approach not only encourages responsible use of artificial intelligence but also aims to foster innovation and boost the competitiveness of the island’s economy.
