Cabildo Invests €1.3 Million in New Machinery for Fuerteventura’s Fifth Container Project

As Fuerteventura continues to attract investors, the island is making significant strides toward sustainability.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has allocated €1.3 million for new machinery to enhance organic waste management, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and the principles of a circular economy.

This investment aims to upgrade the operation of waste transfer plants, particularly in preparation for the introduction of a fifth recycling container designated for organic waste, expected to launch this year. Lola García, the island’s president, emphasized that this initiative marks a significant progression in sustainability efforts, improving selective waste collection and increasing recycling rates across the island. She noted that the new machinery will bolster operational capacity, optimize waste sorting processes, and enable more responsible waste management among residents.

Enrique Pérez, the Minister of Waste, detailed that the equipment acquisition includes five mobile platforms and three tractor units funded by the NextGeneration EU program. This initiative targets more effective biowaste processing, especially in remote municipalities, thereby reducing transportation needs and minimizing the carbon footprint.

Pérez further highlighted that this investment is a crucial step toward achieving decarbonization goals and aligning with upcoming circular economy objectives. He stressed the importance of public engagement in proper waste separation, as community awareness is essential for the system’s success.

The waste transfer plants are strategically located in Tuineje, Lajares (La Oliva), and Mal Nombre (Pájara). These facilities, owned by the island, manage domestic waste collected from municipalities, preparing it for final treatment at the Zurita Environmental Complex.

Through this initiative, the Cabildo is enhancing Fuerteventura’s waste management infrastructure, gearing up for the implementation of the fifth recycling container and fostering a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach.
