The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Education and Youth Service, has launched a study to understand in depth the accommodation situation of people residing on the island who must travel outside Fuerteventura to continue their studies. The initiative will provide data on the costs incurred by students, the difficulties in accessing housing and possible measures that could help alleviate this problem. To this end, this Monday an invitation was sent to students studying outside the island to participate in an anonymous questionnaire, the results of which will be treated in an aggregate manner. The objective is to obtain the most accurate X-ray possible of a reality that affects numerous young people from Majoreros and their families every year. The president of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, Lola García, highlighted the importance of “listening directly to those who are experiencing this situation and having data that allows us to measure the problem.” In this sense, García pointed out that studying outside the island already represents a significant effort for many families, “to which is added an increasingly complex housing market and expenses that can condition the continuity of studies.” The questionnaire addresses questions related to the cost of finding and maintaining accommodation, the expenses that students must face during their stay outside Fuerteventura and the main difficulties they encounter when accessing housing. Likewise, it will allow us to collect the students’ own perception of those measures that could contribute to improving their situation. The Minister of Education, Youth and Water, Adargoma Hernández, explained that the study “will allow us to go from perceptions to concrete data and know first-hand how much it is costing Majorero students to study outside of Fuerteventura.” Hernández stressed that the intention is for the information obtained to have a practical application, so that “we can bring to the working table established at the FECAI proposals and possible solutions supported by the reality that our students are experiencing.” The Ministry of Education is therefore encouraging the largest possible number of students residing in Fuerteventura who are currently studying outside the island to participate, since greater participation will allow us to obtain a more representative image of the situation and existing needs.
