The Cabildo Starts AI Training for Public Employees in Fuerteventura

Embracing AI: Fuerteventura’s Initiative for Public Employees

This past Tuesday, El Cabildo de Fuerteventura kicked off its pioneering project, ‘FuerteventurIA: Artificial Intelligence for All.’ Designed to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence (AI) and various sectors of the local community, this initiative is particularly focused on enhancing the skills of public administration employees. The initiative is being championed by the Consejería de Informática y Nuevas Tecnologías, aiming to usher in a new era of efficiency and responsiveness in public service.

A Collaborative Effort for Enhanced Services

The training program is being developed in collaboration with the Clúster Canarias Excelencia Tecnológica (CET). This partnership enables the program to tap into the latest advancements in AI tools tailored for public administration. The knowledge gained through this training not only aims to streamline administrative processes but also seeks to enhance the quality of services offered to the citizens of Fuerteventura.

Supported by Funding Mechanisms

The project is financially backed by the Fondo de Desarrollo de Canarias (FDCAN) along with contributions from El Cabildo de Fuerteventura. The first steps of the project involve two specific training sessions that are being conducted at the Centro Insular de Juventud in Puerto del Rosario. This central location not only makes training accessible but also encourages community involvement.

Spotlight on Training Modules

Carmen Alonso, the consejera of Informatics and New Technologies, emphasizes that “AI represents an opportunity to modernize the public administration and improve our citizen services.” The upcoming training will immerse public employees in the world of AI, equipping them with a solid understanding of efficient and ethical use of these technologies.

The initial workshop, titled ‘Automation of Public Administration Processes with AI,’ is running through this week and is delivered by DataGrowth. This program focuses on the automation of workflow, intelligent document management, and the application of innovative tools like Gemini and NotebookLM. Such tools are pivotal for reducing repetitive tasks and cutting down management times significantly.

Upcoming Course on Data Protection

Following the automation training, next week will feature ‘Responsible Use of AI and Data Protection in Administration’ taught by Dataseg. This course will delve into the regulatory framework germane to AI and data protection, highlighting essential components such as the General Data Protection Regulation and newly established European AI Regulations. Importantly, this training will also address ethical governance of data and pinpoint risks associated with the integration of AI technologies in public sectors.

FuerteventurIA: A Comprehensive Approach

The ‘FuerteventurIA’ initiative is strategically designed to make AI knowledge accessible and practical for various segments of Fuerteventura’s society. Its broader objective is to facilitate a transformation that is not only technological but also reachable, ethical, and beneficial for all residents.

The program is set to expand beyond public employees in the coming months and will involve new training opportunities aimed at teachers, local businesses, and the general population of Fuerteventura. This gradual rollout signifies a commitment to promoting responsible AI utilization as a means to foster innovation and enhance the island’s competitive stance.

Continuing the Journey in AI Training

The engagement of El Cabildo, alongside local organizations, in implementing such transformative training reflects a clear understanding of the evolving role of technology in public service. By empowering employees with the tools needed to harness AI responsibly, this initiative not only paves the way for improved services but also fosters a culture of continual learning and adaptability among the island’s workforce.

In this swiftly changing digital landscape, Fuerteventura sets a benchmark for communities looking to blend ethics with technology, ensuring that advancements in AI serve to benefit society as a whole.
