The Filming of “El Ser Querido” in Fuerteventura: A Cinematic Journey Begins

The anticipation for the upcoming film El Ser Querido, directed by esteemed filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen and starring the acclaimed actor Javier Bardem, is palpable. As of January 30, 2025, discussions surrounding the film have gained momentum, particularly regarding its filming location. The production company has formally requested permission from the Ayuntamiento de Pájara to film between February 17 and April 4, with a staggering 90% of the movie set to be shot in the picturesque southern region of Fuerteventura.

A Glimpse into the Storyline

El Ser Querido centers on a poignant narrative involving a father, portrayed by Bardem, who is a film director, and his daughter, an actress played by Victoria Luengo. The father-daughter duo is reunited in Fuerteventura to collaborate on the production of a film that harkens back to a gripping story from the 1930s. This unique premise promises a blend of familial dynamics and the complexities of filmmaking, which should resonate with audiences.

Lush Locations Selected for Filming

The breathtaking landscapes of Fuerteventura will serve as a stunning backdrop for the movie. Among the chosen outdoor locations are:

  • Llano de Cotillo: Known for its serene environments.
  • Angostura: A scenic area that adds a unique flavor to the film’s aesthetic.
  • Winter’s Old Runway: A historical site that adds depth to the narrative.
  • Rabo de Ratón: Famous for its untouched nature.
  • Punta de Percebe Lighthouse: An iconic structure that symbolizes guidance and light.
  • Playa de los Ojos and El Matorral Beach: Gorgeous beaches that capture the essence of Fuerteventura’s coast.

Additionally, areas connecting Morro Jable to Llano del Cotillo will provide diverse landscapes that enhance the movie’s visual storytelling.

A Multi-Faceted Production

Not only is the film set to feature a plethora of outdoor shots, but the production also plans to incorporate indoor scenes in hotels, restaurants, and bars across the island over a two-week period. These varied settings are indicative of the film’s dual narrative, illustrating both the present and the past seamlessly.

Collaborative Efforts Behind the Scenes

El Ser Querido is an original production from Movistar Plus, in collaboration with Caballo Films and El Ser Querido AIE, and boasts co-production from France’s Le Pacte. The project has received funding from the ICAA and support from the Creative Europe Media Programme, showcasing a strong international effort to bring this film to life.

This marks Sorogoyen’s sixth feature film and reunites him with his regular co-writer, Isabel Peña, notable for their successful partnership that garnered a Goya Award for As Bestas in 2022.

Casting Choices That Embrace Diversity

The casting process, which took place in Morro Jable on January 17 and 18, was open to a wide array of individuals, emphasizing diversity and inclusivity. The casting director, Amparo Oltra, noted that they were seeking many different profiles. The film will depict two timelines: one set in the present and the other in the past, adding complexity and richness to the storytelling narrative.

Final Thoughts on Fuerteventura’s Cinematic Appeal

As the filming of El Ser Querido approaches, Fuerteventura stands poised to showcase its scenic beauty and cultural richness through the lens of cinema. With its stunning beaches, historical landmarks, and the engaging story of a father’s bond with his daughter, El Ser Querido promises to deliver a compelling cinematic experience, inviting viewers to explore the intricacies of love, filmmaking, and nostalgia.
