El expresidente del Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Marcial Morales, has been unanimously appointed as the candidate for Municipalistas Primero Canarias in the upcoming elections for the Alcaldía de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2027. This decision reflects a unifying effort within the local assembly of the party, aimed at revitalizing the city’s governance.
A Versatile Leader with Extensive Experience
Morales is not unfamiliar with the political landscape of the Canary Islands. His rich experience includes serving as the exconsejero de Empleo y Asuntos Sociales of the Government of Canarias and his role as the exalcalde of Puerto del Rosario. Residing currently in Las Palmas, Morales is actively involved in social initiatives, such as his work with the Fundación Canaria Yrichen and the Comedor Social San Pedro de La Isleta.
The Unveiling of the Candidacy
The presentation of Morales’s candidacy took place during an event attended by key figures in the Municipalistas Primero Canarias party, including Óscar Hernández, the president of Primero Canarias and current alcalde of Agüimes; Teodoro Sosa, the mayor of Gáldar; and several other local leaders. Teodoro Sosa, in particular, underscored the pressing need for transformation in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, stating, “The city needs a significant shake-up, and we are here to deliver that.” He highlighted Morales’s strong track record in public management, emphasizing his “intachable” service history, reputation, and capacity for hard work. This assertion strongly conveys the belief that Morales is the right person to steer the local government toward a more efficient and effective model.

In his remarks, Morales articulated a vision for a functioning Ayuntamiento that prioritizes the voices of its citizens. An Established Political Career
Born in Tuineje in 1958, Marcial Morales has a rich history in public service. He served as the director general of Servicios Sociales from 1993 to 1999 and as a consejero from 1999 to 2003. His political journey also includes a decade as councilor and mayor of Puerto del Rosario, followed by a tenure as presidente of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura from 2015 to 2019.
His recent return to politics as a grassroots member of Municipalistas Primero Canarias, only this past June, underlines a renewed commitment to public service, focusing on the pressing needs of Las Palmas as he gears up for the 2027 municipal elections.
