The General Hospital of Fuerteventura celebrates a day to make visible the reality of people with ostomies The General Hospital of Fuerteventura, attached to the Department of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, held a day this Friday on the occasion of World Day of People with Ostomies, which is commemorated every October 3. Under the motto ‘Visibility, strength and life’, the meeting brought together health professionals, ostomy patients and family members to share experiences and address the adaptation process and care associated with the ostomy. The event, organized by the Ostomy consultation team and the island network of the BPSO® program, included the participation of professionals and collaborators linked to the care of ostomized people in Fuerteventura, including the Canary Islands Patient School and the Canary Islands Ostomy Association (AOCAN). During the meeting, aspects related to stoma care, adaptation to this new situation and health and psychosocial support were addressed. The hospital’s Ostomy Nursing clinic has treated 145 patients and recorded 964 consultations since its launch in February 2023 and offers individualized monitoring and advice for stoma care, device management, and the prevention and care of possible complications. The Fuerteventura Health Services Management has participated in the BPSO® (Best Practice Spotlight Organization) program since 2022 and in 2025 obtained the designation as a Center Committed to Excellence in Care. In addition, since last year the General Hospital of Fuerteventura has had a bathroom adapted for people with ostomies, located at the main entrance to the centre, which facilitates the change and emptying of the collection bag in conditions of accessibility, hygiene, comfort and privacy.
